No. 12 Women's Swim/Dive Breaks Two Meet Records, Surges Further Ahead at MIAA Championships

Hope holds a 106-point leader after Day 2

The 12th-ranked Hope College women's swimming and diving team seized control of the MIAA Championships with a triumphant Thursday.

The Flying Dutch won three events and set two MIAA meet records at Calvin University en route to accumulating 436 points and extending their lead to 106 points.

The four-day meet continues on Friday, Feb. 21, at 10 a.m. with preliminaries and 5 p.m. with finals. Hope seeks a fifth consecutive league title for the third time in program history.

The Flying Dutch clocked MIAA meet records in Day 2's first event, the 200-yard freestyle relay, and the last one, the 400 medley relay.

"I feel like the day couldn't have gone a whole lot better," head coach Jake Taber said. "We set the stage in the morning and embraced the opportunity to go out and race tonight. We did a great job, things fell right into place."

Senior Greta Gidley (Franklin, Michigan / Mercy HS) earned a three-peat in the 200 individual medley after touching the wall in first at 2 minutes, 1.59 seconds. Hope won the event for the eighth consecutive season.

Junior Katie Hermann (Canton, Michigan / Mercy) finished runner-up at 2:04.24. Sophomore Anna Stolle (Fishers, Indiana / Hamilton Southeastern) took fifth at 2:08.22. Sophomore Madi Remenschneider (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) placed sixth at 2:11.28. Sophomore Dillon Horsley (Indianapolis, Indiana / North Central) was seventh at 2:11.68.

In the 200 freestyle relay, Hope delivered the second-fastest swim in NCAA Division III this season. Gidley, senior Lauren Ryle (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Catholic Central), junior Bella Turner (Chelsea, Michigan / Chelsea) and junior Laurel Wasiniak (Northville, Michigan / Northville) set MIAA and school records with a time of 1 minute, 31.75 seconds.

The relay surpassed the Flying Dutch's MIAA and Hope record time of 1:33.26 set by Ryle, Delaney Wesolek, Wasiniak and Sara Kraus (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) last season.

Gidley's 23.09-second leadoff is the fifth-fastest 50 free in Division III this season and set a school record, eclipsing Libby Westrate's 2013 swim of 23.34.

The Flying Dutch also won the 200 free B relay for additional points. Kraus, sophomore Paige Potter (Lake Orion, Michigan / Lake Orion), Horsley and freshman Emmy Sower (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) finished in 1:38.88.

In the 400 medley relay, Kraus, Ryle, Gidley and Turner went 3:44.43 and topped Hope's MIAA and school-record 2024 effort of 3:36.11 from Hermann, Ryle, Gidley and Wesolek.

It was the Flying Dutch's sixth consecutive relay title in the event.

Hope's B relay also clocked the top time in its race and scored. Hermann, Remenschneider, Sower and freshman Megan Wedeking (Lexington, Kentucky / Lexington) went 3:52.10.

Hope also scored in 1-meter diving, the 50 free and and the 500 free.

In 1-meter diving, Laura Zupancic (Fort Collins, Colorado / Liberty Common) placed runner-up with a score of 404.95 points.

Two more Hope divers scored in the event. Senior Molly Leonard (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Catholic Central) posted a fourth-place total of 370.30. Senior Hope Weeda (Grandville, Michigan / Calvin Christian) was sixth with 358.90.

Turner took third at 23.50. Ryle finished fourth at 23.56. Sower was seventh at 24.03.

In the 500 free, Hope qualified five for the A final.

Freshman Emme D'Errico (Farmington Hills, Michigan / Farmington) led the Flying Dutch with a third-place swim of 5:06.39.

D'Errico was followed by senior Norah Martin (Middleton, Wisconsin / Middleton) in fourth at 5;07.38, senior Grace Wesley (Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan / Grosse Pointe North) in fifth at 5:11.49, junior Ashlea Swingewood (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) in sixth at 5:17.28 and sophomore Natalie Pitera (Livonia, Michigan / Stevenson) in eighth at 5:20.48.
