Men's Track and Field Posts Two 20 Times Nationally at GVSU

The Hope College men's track and field team posted two Top 20 performances in NCAA Division III this season during the Grand Valley State University Al Owens Classic this weekend.

The Flying Dutchmen also recorded five Top-5 efforts at the two-day, non-scoring meet that included teams from NCAA Divisions II and III, and the NAIA.


On Saturday, junior Ian Petruska (Fort Collins, Colorado / Fort Collins HS) recorded the 19th-fastest 1,500-meter run in the nation with a PR time of 3 minutes, 51.56 seconds. Petruska finished fourth in a field of 78. 


In the 100 meters, junior Liam Danitz (West Branch, Michigan / Ogemaw Heights) clocked the nation's 20th-fastest time in NCAA Division III this season, going 10.61 seconds for third place in a field of 41.

Danitz topped a 200-meter field of 34 by posting a sprint of 21.09 seconds. He's already ranked second in the nation at 20.94 seconds.

In the javelin, sophomore Matthew Bir (Wenatchee, Washington / River Academy) posted a season-best toss of 49.12 meters (161 feet, 2 inches) and finished runner-up in a field of 22.

In the 5,000 meters, junior Carston Cole (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) clocked a PR time of 14:46.12 to place fourth in a field of 75.

In the 400-meter hurdles, freshman Logan Lipka (Frankenmuth, Michigan / Frankenmuth) posted a sixth-place run of 57.81. Senior Samuel Miller (Zionsville, Indiana / Zionsville) was 10th at 59.21.

In the 400 meters, sophomore Dylan Terpstra (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) took sixth by posting a run of 48.98. Senior Joshua Ennen (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland West) was 10th with a season-best 50.15.

In the 110-meter hurdles, Lipka placed eighth with a PR 15.68 seconds.

In the 800 meters, senior Erickson Kunzler (Marne, Michigan / Catholic Central) took eighth with a season-best time of 1:54.69.

On Friday, two Hope throwers posted season-best efforts.

In the shot put, junior Caleb Paarlberg (Alto, Michigan / Caledonia) heaved a season-best throw of 13.30 meters (43-7 ¾) and took fifth. Sophomore Griffin Bloch (Clinton Township, Michigan / Chippewa Valley) was ninth at 12.21 meters (40-0 ¾).

In the hammer throw, junior Brendyn Mroz (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grandville) recorded a season-best toss of 44.03 meters (144-5) and took 10th.

Hope is scheduled to compete next at the MIAA Outdoor Combined Events Championships on Tuesday-Wednesday, April 22-23, at Calvin University.
