The Hope College women's tennis team delivered a statement win against Trine University, cruising to a dominant 7-0 sweep and securing its place in the history books with a milestone 25th outright MIAA regular-season title and 30th championship overall.
The 32nd-ranked Flying Dutch won the program's eighth championship in the last nine seasons, a remarkable run of sustained excellence that reflects the program's rich legacy.
The 30th title also sits at the second-most MIAA regular-season titles for any Hope sports program. Men's basketball has 41 total titles.Â
Head coach Austin Hunt expressed his excitement and thankfulness on being a part of the program's historic title.Â
"My time at Hope has been interesting, as I came in and saw what the women's tennis program tradition of excellence was, and it's really cool to know that a lot of work and tradition has been built up for an extensive amount of time," Hunt said. "It's exciting to be the head coach who gets to continue that tradition, and for the players to continue that tradition, but in a different role."With this triumph, Hope capped off an undefeated conference campaign, displaying the consistency and competitive fire required to excel at the highest level."
Hunt reflected on the unblemished conference play while attributing the team's success to two things.Â
"I think the first thing is our very intentional schedule that we build leading up to conference was a huge factor. We always play a difficult schedule leading up to the regular season, so we are always ready for what could be thrown at us. I think the other factor to this season's success was the change in doubles points scoring. Having to win two of three doubles matches to earn the point could be looked at as a pretty difficult and big change. The women never lost a doubles point this season and I think preparing and practicing as we have and how we prepared our season helped us in the long run."
The team also improved its overall record to an impressive 16-6, a testament to the players' grit and determination throughout the season.
Hope will enter next week's MIAA Tournament as the No. 1 seed, earning a first-round bye in the six-team tournament. The Flying Dutch will host a semifinal at the Vande Poel-Heeringa Stadium Courts on Wednesday, April 30, at a time to be announced. The field will be announced on Sunday, April 27.
