Men's Golf Fires Season's Best Round, Ties for Fifth at Carthage's Firebirds Classic

The Hope College men's golf team finished red hot during the final round of the Carthage College Firebirds Fall Classic on Tuesday in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Six Flying Dutchmen golfers combined to birdie 20 holes at The Club at Strawberry Creek, powering a 4-over 292 team score and a rise into a fifth-place tie at the 36-hole, 19-team event.

Hope matched Millikin University (Ill.) at 20-over for the tournament (304-292—596).

No. 10-ranked Aurora University (Ill.) won the event at 8-under, placing ahead of No. 4-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University (5-under), Central College (Iowa) (15-over), and Carthage at 17-over.

The Flying Dutchmen's 292 was their best round of the season.

Sophomore Will Thomas (Portage, Mich. / Portage Central) topped Hope by finishing at 2-over for the tournament and tying for a team-best 14th place in the 108-golfer field.

On Tuesday, Thomas fired a team-best 71 with five birdies, nine pars and four bogeys.

Freshman Joey Blondia (Richland, Mich. / Gull Lake) fired a 72 with four birdies and 10 pars.

Senior Klay Redman (Dublin, Ohio / Dublin Coffman) carded a 73 during the second round that included two birdies and 14 pars.

Senior Liam Casey (Northville, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) and freshman Kody Vis (Spring Lake, Mich. / Spring Lake) posted 74s on Tuesday.

Vis recorded five birdies and seven pars. Casey had one birdie and 14 pars.

Junior Hank Roebuck (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) posted a 76 with three birdies and 10 pars.

Hope's next tournament is Monday, Sept. 15, at 11 a.m. at Marshall Country Club in Marshall.
