The Hope College women's golf team put together a strong start at the Heidelberg University Fall Invite, finishing Friday's opening round tied for first place with the University of Mount Union (Ohio).
Playing at Fostoria Country Club in Fostoria, Ohio, Hope's A team carded a season-low 317 to share a one-stroke lead over third-place Calvin University in the 16-team, 36-hole event.
The final round is scheduled to tee off on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 9 a.m.
Junior Allyson Zuidema (Northville, Michigan / Northville HS) led the Flying Dutch A squad with a 6-over-par 78, good for a share of fifth place in the 91-golfer field. Heidelberg's Brooke Barnes is the first-round leader after a 73.
Freshman Anelise Gatti (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton) followed closely with a 79 to tie for ninth.
Junior Rachael Jones (Grove City, Ohio / Grove City) and senior Sara Muir (Ada, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) each posted 80s to share 13th.
Junior Jaiden Winters (New Carlisle, Indiana / New Prairie) rounded out the scoring lineup with an 87.
Hope's B squad also turned in an impressive effort, finishing the first round in fourth place with a team score of 326, two strokes ahead of fifth-place Washington and Jefferson College (Pa.).
Freshman Gabby Hanover (Mason, Michigan / Mason) led the way by matching Zuidema with a 78/.
Junior Kylie Gernaat (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Kalamazoo Christian) posted an 81 to tie for 17th.
Freshman Kennedy Gernaat (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Kalamazoo Christian) carded an 83 to sit in 25th.
Senior Hannah Finch (Dexter, Michigan / Dexter) added an 84 for 29th place, and senior Caydee Constant (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) shot 85.
