The Hope College women's tennis team turned in a competitive showing at the Intercollegiate Tennis Associational Central Regional championships, held Friday-Saturday, Sept. 19-20, in St. Louis, Missouri.
The event was hosted by Washington University in St. Louis and featured a deep field of regional talent.
Senior Amanda Lopykinski (Lemont, Illinois / Lemont Township HS) opened her tournament with a bye, then delivered a commanding 6-1, 6-0 win over Julia Hooker of Calvin University in the Round of 64. She was later defeated by Sarena Biria of the University of Chicago, 6-0, 6-1, in the Round of 32.
Junior Madison Wei (Parker, Colorado / Regis Jesuit) earned a straight-set victory in her opening match, defeating Natalie Labicki of Monmouth College 6-2, 6-2. Wei's run ended in the Round of 64Â against Ally Lin of Washington University in St. Louis, 1-6, 7-6 (3), 1-0 (11-9).
Sophomore Hadley Krygier (White Lake, Michigan / Walled Lake Northern) advanced to the Round of 32 after a hard-fought win over Elizabeth Meiners of The College of Wooster, 6-1, 6(3)-7(7), 11-9. Krygier battled through another close match before falling to Isabelle Chong of the University of Chicago, 7-5, 4-6, 10-3.
In doubles play, Lopykinski and Krygier received a Round of 128 bye before falling in the Round of 32 to Maya Stolarsky and Marguerite Shope of Kenyon College, 8-5.Â
Junior Phoebe Walker (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City Central) and sophomore Kaitlyn Stievater (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan / Wylie E. Groves) competed in the Round of 128, where they were defeated by Maddie Larsen and Caitlin VanWinkle of Denison University, 8-3.
The Flying Dutch head to home courts on Friday, Sept. 26. as they host Saginaw Valley State University at 4 p.m. at the VandePoel-Heeringa Stadium Courts.Â
