Men's Swim/Dive Kicks Off Season at TEAM Be Better's Invitational vs. Michigan, Purdue and Calvin

The Hope College men's swimming and diving team posted three third-place efforts during the season-opening TEAM Be Better; Invitational on Friday at the University of Michigan.

The non-scoring, four-team meet honors the late Ian Miskelley of Holland, a former Michigan swimmer who died in 2020. Founded by Miskelley's family, the Team Be Better; organization follows a mission to teach families what family-centered mental healthcare looks like through supportive consultations and individualized-dynamic education and to ensure excellent care through advocacy. 

The Flying Dutchmen also competed against Purdue University and Calvin University.

Junior Josh Bordovsky (Herndon, Virginia / South Lakes) clocked a third-place swim in the 100-yard individual medley of 52.01 seconds. 

Two Hope divers took third: freshman Finn Sanders (Wyoming, Michigan / Grandville) on the 1-meter board with 209.78 points and sophomore Samuel York (Plymouth, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) on the 1-meter board with 165.90 points.

The Orange and Blue recorded the top NCAA Division III finishes in 10 events, including the 100 IM and both diving boards.

Junior Graham Eisenmann (Ozark, Missouri / Ozark) posted a fourth-place 100 butterfly of 50.97 seconds.

Hope placed fifth behind Michigan and Purdue in three relays: men's 200 medley and 400 freestyle, and the mixed 200 medley.

Hope placed third behind Michigan and Purdue in the mixed 200 freestyle relays and fifth in three more relays: men's 200 medley and 400 freestyle, and the mixed 200 medley.

In the mixed 200 free, freshman Claudia Busse (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven), sophomore Blake Hetherington (Jackson, Michigan / Lumen Christi), Eisenmann and senior Laurel Wasiniak (Northville, Michigan / Northville) posted a time of 1:31.52.

In the 200 medley, Bordovsky, sophomore Luke Newcomb (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton), sophomore Everett Cox (Sugar Land, Texas / Logos Prep) and sophomore George Marsh (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan / Seaholm) touched the wall at 1:34.98.

In the 400 freestyle, Cox, Eisenmann, Marsh and Bordovsky finished in 3:08.22.

In the mixed 200 medley, freshman Mackenzie Baldwin (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa), Newcomb, Busse and freshman Nolan Smith (Buffalo Grove, Illinois / Buffalo Grove) went 1:41.49.

The Orange and Blue compete next on Friday-Saturday, Oct. 10-11, at the Grand Valley State University Invite hosted by the Holland Aquatic Center.
