Women's Swim/Dive Starts the Season vs. Michigan, Purdue and Calvin at TEAM Be Better; Invitational

The Hope College women's swimming and diving team delivered two third-place efforts during the season-opening TEAM Be Better; Invitational on Friday at the University of Michigan.

The non-scoring, four-team meet honors the late Ian Miskelley of Holland, a former Michigan swimmer who died in 2020. Founded by Miskelley's family, the Team Be Better; organization follows a mission to teach families what family-centered mental healthcare looks like through supportive consultations and individualized-dynamic education and to ensure excellent care through advocacy.

The MIAA's preseason favorites also competed against Purdue University and Calvin University.

Two Hope divers finished third: junior Laura Zupancic (Fort Collins, Colorado / Liberty Common) on the 3-meter board with 211.65 points and sophomore Heidi Moody (Moreland Heights, Ohio / Olentangy Orange) on the 1-meter board with 172.5 points.

Hope also took third in the mixed 200-yard freestyle relay. Freshman Claudia Busse (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven), sophomore Blake Hetherington (Jackson, Michigan / Lumen Christi), Eisenmann and senior Laurel Wasiniak (Northville, Michigan / Northville) posted a time of 1:31.52.

The Flying Dutch also finished fifth in the 100-yard individual medley. Senior Greta Gidley (Franklin, Michigan / Mercy) clocked a swim of 58.25 seconds.

In the mixed 200 medley, freshman Mackenzie Baldwin (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa), sophomore Luke Newcomb (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton), Busse and freshman Nolan Smith (Buffalo Grove, Illinois / Buffalo Grove) went 1:41.49.

The Orange and Blue compete next on Friday-Saturday, Oct. 10-11, at the Grand Valley State University Invite hosted by the Holland Aquatic Center.
