Women's Swimming and Diving Alan Babbitt

No. 10 Women's Swim/Dive Wins Four Events, Takes Second Place at MIAA Invite

The Hope College women's swimming and diving team posted first-place efforts in four events at the MIAA invite and placed second on Saturday.

The 10th-ranked Flying Dutch totaled 599 points during the six-team meet at Calvin University.

Hope closed the day by winning the 200-yard freestyle relay. Senior Greta Gidley (Franklin, Michigan / Mercy), senior Laurel Wasiniak (Northville, Michigan / Northville), freshman Claudia Busse (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven), and senior Bella Turner (Chelsea, Michigan / Chelsea) posted a swim of 1 minute, 34.39 seconds, touching the wall 0.18 ahead of Calvin.

The Flying Dutch posted the top five swims in the 400 individual medley, led by the 1-2 punch of senior Katier Hermann (Canton, Michigan / Mercy) in first at 4:35.08 and freshman Emme D'Errico (Farmington Hills, Michigan / Farmington) in second at 4:40.13.

In the 100 freestyle, Turner recorded the fastest swim at 52.66 seconds, edging Calvin's Meghan Bengelink by .01.

In the 200 butterfly, freshman Mackenzie Baldwin (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) clocked a first-place swim of 2:13.52 — topping second-place Grace Schutter of Calvin, who went 2:16.10.

Hope finished runner-up in three events.

In the 200 freestyle, Turner swam a second-place time of 1:59.03 behind Calvin's Emma Merkel, who finished at 1:52.56.

In the 200 backstroke, Gidley posted a runner-up effort of 2:04.34 behind Mekel at 2:01.26.

In 3-meter diving, freshman Grace Dawson (Jackson, Michigan / Western) took second with a  score of 250.05 points. Albion College's Wen Wadsworth-Curcuru was first with 267.75 points.

Results do not count toward determining the MIAA champion. No. 18 Calvin placed first with 631 points. Kalamazoo College finished third with 332 points and was followed by Alma College (299), Albion (174) and The University of Olivet (31). 

Hope's next meet is Saturday, Jan. 31, at 1 p.m. vs. No. 7 University of Chicago at Holland Aquatic Center.
