The seventh-ranked Hope College women's swimming and diving team recorded the fastest times in three events and eight second-place finishes Saturday during a dual meet against No. 7 University of Chicago at the Holland Aquatic Center.
Freshman
Makenzie Baldwin (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) won the 200-yard backstroke in 2 minutes, 7.39 seconds, finishing 3.15 seconds ahead of Chicago's Kylie Stuart.
Baldwin also led off the winning 200 medley relay, teaming with senior
Greta Gidley (Franklin, Michigan / Mercy), freshman
Claudia Busse (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) and senior
Bella Turner (Chelsea, Michigan / Chelsea) to post a time of 1:45.27 that edged Chicago by 0.10 seconds.
Hope closed the meet with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay as Gidley, Turner, Busse and senior
Laurel Wasiniak (Northville, Michigan / Northville) touched in 3:31.06, 2.49 seconds ahead of Chicago. The Maroons won the dual meet, 187-111.
Baldwin finished runner-up in the 100 backstroke at 58.20, trailing Chicago's Karina Hartounian by 0.65 seconds.
Wasiniak recorded second-place finishes in the 100 freestyle at 53.30, 0.83 seconds behind Chicago's Naomi Ong, and the 200 freestyle at 1:56.74, 3.68 seconds after Ong.
Gidley placed second in two events: the 100 breaststroke at 1:04.40, trailing Chicago's Alicia Soosai by 0.32 seconds, and the 100 butterfly at 56.77, 0.24 seconds behind Chicago's NouNou Chang.
Turner added a runner-up swim in the 50 freestyle at 24.26, finishing 0.11 seconds behind Chang.
Senior
Katie Hermann (Canton, Michigan / Mercy) also recorded two second-place performances, placing second in the 200 breaststroke at 2:28.35, 2.19 seconds behind Soosai, and in the 200 individual medley at 2:10.55, 1.40 seconds after Hartounian.
Hope returns to competition Friday, Feb. 6, at 4:30 p.m. at Calvin University.
