Women's Track and Field Brett Showers '26

Women's Track and Field Excels at GVSU Big Meet

The Hope College women's track and field team turned in an impressive showing at the Grand Valley State University Big Meet this weekend by two event victories and a strong relay performance against a competitive field.

Senior Sara Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West) topped the Flying Dutch, posting a victory in the 400 meters by crossing the finish line in 54.54 seconds. It's the fastest time in NCAA Division III so far this indoor season.


Sophomore Olivia Ippel (St. Joseph, Michigan / St. Joseph) clocked the team's top time in the 5,000 meters posting a season-best time of 17:54.55 in her heat.


Freshman Anna Sybenga (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) won her heat in the 5,000 meters, recording a time of 17:55.72.


Freshman Taylor Mitchell (Otsego, Michigan / Otsego) earned a third-place finish in her 5,000 meet, crossing the line in 18:39.04.


Senior Natalie Christnagel (Grosse Ile, Michigan / Grosse Ile) delivered a podium performance in the high jump, placing third after clearing 1.58 meters (5-2.25).


Junior Abigail Cumings (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) recorded a runner-up finish in the pole vault, clearing 2.92 meters (9 feet, 7 inches).


Senior Molly Durow (Glenview, Illinois / Glenbrook South) posted a sixth-place finish in the 800 meters, finishing in 2:16.95.


Sophomore Sofia Fisher (Lombard, Illinois / Montini Catholic) recorded an eighth-place finish in the 200 meters, crossing the finish line in 25.35 seconds.


The 4x400-meter relay team of Frances Cozzens (Lyman, New Hampshire / Saint Johnsbury Academy), Jaidyn Klimp (Galesburg, Michigan / Galesburg Augusta), Savana Monville (Auburn, Michigan / Bay City Western), and Schermerhorn added an eighth-place finish with a time of 3:52.41.


Hope will compete next at the MIAA Indoor Championships - Combined Events on Monday, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m. at Alma College in Alma, Michigan. Two Flying Dutch will be in the pentathlon.
