No. 11 Women's Swim/Dive Wins Five More Events, Extends Lead at MIAA Championships

Hope sets MIAA school records during Day 3, leads by 218 points

The No. 11 Hope College women's swimming and diving team continued its march towards a sixth straight MIAA title, winning five of six events during the third day of the MIAA Championships on Friday evening at the Holland Aquatic Center.

Hope has won 11 of the 12 swimming events over the first three days of competition as the Flying Dutch extended its lead over the field to over 200 points with one day remaining.

Senior Greta Gidley (Franklin, Michigan / Mercy) captured two MIAA titles – winning the 100 butterfly before laying down a new MIAA and school record in the 100 breaststroke just two events later. Gidley, who was also on the winning 200 medley relay team, now owns eight career individual MIAA crowns.

Freshman Makenzie Baldwin (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) added her second MIAA title of the meet, winning the 100 backstroke, while sophomore Emme D'Errico (Farmington Hills, Michigan / Farmington) triumphed in the 400 individual medley after posting a new school record.

With one day of competition remaining, Hope leads the field with 874 points. No. 13 Calvin University is second with 652 points, while Kalamazoo College ranks third, scoring 310 points. Alma College (284) and Albion College (237) rank fourth and fifth, respectively, while the University of Olivet is sixth with 87 points.

The Flying Dutch opened the evening with a victory in the 200 medley relay, capturing the event for the third time in the last four years. The team of Baldwin, Gidley, freshman Claudia Busse (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) and senior Bella Turner (Chelsea, Michigan / Chelsea) combined for a season-best 1:41.46, improving upon their NCAA Division III qualifying time.

In the 400 IM, Hope qualified seven for the evening championship final and took the top three spots, led by D'Errico's school-record 4:24.06. She topped the old mark of 4:25.66, set by Sara Kraus a year ago, while capturing her second career MIAA title. D'Errico is the third different Hope swimmer to win the event in as many years.

Senior Katie Hermann Katie Hermann (Canton, Michigan / Mercy) and junior Anna Stolle (Fishers, Indiana / Hamilton Southeastern) placed second and third in the 400 IM as the top three swimmers all posted time drops of nearly seven seconds or more from their morning swims.

Gidley began her individual double with a victory in the 100 butterfly, topping the field with a time of 55.45. Two events later in the 100 breaststroke, she claimed victory again with her second meet record of the day.

After posting a record 1:02.56 in the morning preliminaries of the 100 breast, Gidley lowered her mark with a time of 1:01.89 in the finals. The old record was held by Albion's Mattie Smith, who clocked a 1:02.57 in 2024. Gidley also lowered her own school record of 1:02.48 from last season.

In the 100 butterfly, Busse finished second with a personal-best time of 57.20.

Senior Madi Remenschneider (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) placed third in the 100 breaststroke with a personal-best 1:03.89, while freshman Reiss Estep (Smyrna, Georgia / Whitefield Academy) touched fourth with a time of 1:05.43.

Hope placed three swimmers in the top four spots of the 200 freestyle, led by senior Laurel Wasiniak (Northville, Michigan / Northville), who touched second with a time of 1:50.99. Turner finished third after posting the top time in preliminaries, while freshman Brianna Elliott (El Paso, Texas / Maxine L Silva Magnet) placed fourth.

Baldwin capped off the evening with a winning time of 56.29 in the 100 backstroke, leading a Hope charge as the Flying Dutch took the top five positions.

Junior Avery Bills (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City Central), junior Madeline McGee (Ionia, Michigan / Ionia), freshman Ella Cabbage (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City Central) and junior Paige Potter (Lake Orion, Michigan / Lake Orion) completed the sweep as all five Hope swimmers touched in under a minute.
