Track and Field's Abigail Cummins Takes First in Pole Valut at GVSU

Hope also competed on the University of Michigan on Friday

The Hope College women's track and field team competed at two high-level meets on Friday, splitting squads between the GVSU Tune-Up hosted by Grand Valley State University and the Silverston Invitational hosted by the University of Michigan. 

The Flying Dutch recorded multiple top-five finishes across both competitions.


At GVSU, the Flying Dutch pole vaulters dominated the competition with four top-five finishes. Junior Abigail Cumings (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) won the event with a clearance of 3.00 meters (9 feet, 10 inches). 


Freshman Kate May (Arcadia, Michigan /Frankfort) finished second at 2.85 meters (9 feet, 4.25 inches), while freshmen Rylee Fraaza (Richland, Michigan / Gull Lake) and Ava Boes (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) tied for fourth and fifth, each clearing 2.70 meters (8 feet, 10.25 inches).


At Michigan, senior Sara Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West) turned in one of the top performances of the weekend in the 200 meters. She placed third overall in 24.39 seconds, recording a season best and moving to No. 6 nationally in NCAA Division III.


Hope's sprinters delivered strong performances in the 60 meters at GVSU. Sophomore Sofia Fisher (Lombard, Illinois / Montini Catholic) led the way with a third-place finish in 7.99 seconds, while senior Ava Schmidt (Saline, Michigan / Saline) placed fifth in 8.13 seconds.


Freshman Savana Monville (Auburn, Michigan / Bay City Western) added a podium finish at GVSU in the 200 meters, placing third in 26.02 seconds and recording a personal best.


Senior Frances Cozzens (Lyman, New Hampshire / Saint Johnsbury Academy) clocked a season-best 59.86 seconds in the 400 meters to finish fifth overall.


Hope will next compete at the MIAA Indoor Championships, presented by Collegiate Credit Uion, on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 28, hosted by Trine University in Angola, Indiana.
