Men's Track and Field Crowns Three More MIAA Indoor Event Champions

Hope places second at the eight-team meet

The Hope College men's track & field team crowned three new indoor league champions and finished in second place at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Indoor Track & Field Championships, presented by Collegiate Credit Union, that concluded on Saturday at Trine University.

Led by junior Dylan Terpstra, sophomore Kevin Barifagok and freshman Aiden Moore. the Flying Dutchmen totaled 165 points over the two-day meet — finishing behind Calvin University (191) and ahead of Trine University (117.5). Albion College (57), The University of Olivet (47), Adrian College (39), Kalamazoo College (27) and Alma College (18.5).


Terpstra (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) captured Hope's first MIAA indoor championship in the 400 meters with a winning time of 49.15 seconds to score 10 points. 


Barifagok (Las Vegas, Nevada / Cristo Rey Saint Viator) followed with a runner-up finish in 49.80, and freshman Luke Bellino (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton) placed third in 49.95 as the trio combined for 24 team points.


Barifagok also delivered Hope's first title in the indoor 60-meter hurdles, winning in 8.36 seconds to earn 10 points. Freshman Lincoln Phillips (Dorr, Michigan / Hamilton) added five points with a fourth-place finish in 8.52, and sophomore Logan Lipka (Frankenmuth, Michigan /Frankenmuth) contributed two points in seventh place at 8.63.


The Flying Dutchmen continued to collect distance points in the mile and 3,000 meters. 


Moore (Battle Creek, Michigan / Lakeview) became the Flying Dutchmen's first indoor mile gold medalist with a time of 4:13.94 to earn 10 points. 


Sophomore Elias Kretchmar (Granville, Ohio / Granville) earned a bronze medal with a run of 4:16.10 to score six points, while junior Ian Petruska (Fort Collins, Colorado / Fort Collins) came in fifth place with a time of 4:25.21 and sophomore Cooper Jacobsen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Eastern) finished sixth with a time of 4:26.04. 


Kretchmar returned in the 3,000 meters to finish second in 8:42.24 and score eight points. Freshman Elijah Forbord (Howell, Michigan / Brighton) placed third for six points, senior Carston Cole (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) added four points in fifth coming in at 8:43.77, and senior Chad Perrine (Jackson, Michigan / Jackson) contributed two points in seventh with a time of 8:51.77.


In the 60 meters, freshman Maurice Streeter (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Kalamazoo Central) secured a third-place finish in 6.84 seconds to score six points. 


In the 800 meters, senior Erickson Kunzler (Marne, Michigan / Catholic Central) placed third in 1:59.10 to score six points.


The Flying Dutchmen closed the meet with a fourth-place finish in the 4x400 relay as Vamsee Vemana (Canton, Michigan / Plymouth), Josh Bruxvoort (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian), Phillips and Brad Raredon (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) combined for a time of 3:31.83 to score five points.


Bellino placed fourth in 22.12 seconds to earn five points. Terpstra followed in fifth with a time of 22.12 for four points, and Streeter finished sixth in 22.30 to add three points.


Freshman Gavin Grover (Glen Ellyn, Illinois / St. Francis) cleared 4.16 meters (13-7¾) to place seventh in the pole vault and earn two points. 


Lipka added two more points with a seventh-place leap of 12.59 meters (41-3¾) in the triple jump.

Senior Caleb Paarlberg (Alto, Michigan / Caledonia) finished eighth in the shot put with a toss of 13.34 meters (43-9¼) to add one point. 


Hope will return to action on Friday, March 6, at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Last Chance meet in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
