Women's Track and Field Sending Seven to NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships

The Hope College women's track and field team will compete in seven events at this week's NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

The Flying Dutch qualified in the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter dashes, the 3,000-meter steeplechase, the heptathlon, and both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.


Senior Sara Schermerhorn, the indoor national champion in the 400-meter dash, aims to sweep the event at outdoor nationals.


The three-day meet begins Thursday, May 21, at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.


On Thursday, competition begins at 10:40 a.m. CDT for freshman Jaidyn Klimp of Galesburg, Michigan (Galesburg-Augusta HS), in the heptathlon. Klimp, seeded 13th, will compete in the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, and 200-meter dash.


Schermerhorn and sophomore Sofia Fisher of Lombard, Illinois (Montini Catholic HS), will run in the 200-meter dash preliminaries at 5:40 p.m. CDT. Schermerhorn, an exercise science major from Traverse City, Michigan (Traverse City West HS), is tied for 15th with a qualifying time of 24.27 seconds, while Fisher is 20th at 24.36 seconds. Hope is the only school with two qualifiers in the event.


The 4x400 relay team of Klimp, freshman Savana Monville of Auburn, Michigan (Bay City Western HS), senior Frances Cozzens of Lyman, New Hampshire (St. Johnsbury Academy), and Schermerhorn will run in the preliminaries at 7 p.m. CDT.


On Friday, Klimp concludes the heptathlon with the long jump, javelin, and 1,500-meter run, beginning at 12:30 p.m. CDT.


The 4x100 relay team of senior Ava Schmidt of Saline, Michigan (Saline HS), Schermerhorn, Klimp, and Fisher will race in the preliminaries at 3 p.m. CDT. The relay is seeded 12th.


Schermerhorn will compete in the 400-meter dash preliminaries at 4:50 p.m. CDT. She is the top seed with a qualifying time of 54.27 seconds.


Fisher will run in the 100-meter dash preliminaries at 5:20 p.m. CDT. She is tied for 21st in qualifying with a time of 11.89 seconds.


Senior Molly Durow of Glenview, Illinois (Glenbrook South HS), will race in the 3,000-meter steeplechase final. The elementary education major is seeded 15th with a qualifying time of 10:37.56.


On Saturday, finals for the running events will be held at 1 p.m. CDT for the 4x100 relay, 2:10 p.m. CDT for the 400, 2:30 p.m. CDT for the 100, 3:40 p.m. CDT for the 200, and 4:50 p.m. CDT for the 4x400 relay.
