Box Score 1 The Hope College softball team rallied on the road to sweep Adrian College 3-1 and 7-5 on Wednesday and clinch a berth in next week's Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament.
The Flying Dutch (19-14 overall) now can secure the No. 2 seed for the league tournament by winning one game of a doubleheader at third-place Calvin College on Saturday, April 26.
On Wednesday, Hope scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to claim a 7-5 win in Game 2. Eight batters batted in the sixth.
The Flying Dutch plated catcher Emma Page of Portage (Portage Central HS) on a passed ball, third baseman Kelsey Cooper on a fielder's choice off the bat from centerfielder Autumn Anderson of Wayland (Wayland HS) and leftfielder Taylor Krumm on a fielding error after shortstop Jenna Maury of Lawton (Lawton HS) hit a ball to third.
Earlier in the game, designated player Julie Sobieski of St. Charles, Ill. (Webster Groves HS), and junior first baseman Peyton Wells of Rockford (Rockford HS) slugged back-to-back home runs for the Flying Dutch. Wells leads Hope with five of its 18 homers.
Winning pitcher Maddie Bellew of Jackson (Jackson HS) tossed two scoreless innings of relief. Bellew (1-2) struck out one and allowed five hits.
Junior pitcher Olivia Vacik of Bollingbrook, Ill. (Neuqua Valley HS), tossed a perfect seventh for her third save.
In the first game, Cooper snapped a 1-1 tie when she blasted a two-run homer in the top of the sixth.
Vacik (2-0) fired 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. She struck out and yielded four hits.
Sophomore pitcher Kate Laverty of Eaton Rapids (Eaton Rapids HS) earned her first save by retiring all four batters she faced.
