Box Score 1 The Hope College softball team swept Calvin College for the eighth time in nine years on Saturday to grab the No. 2 seed for next week's Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament.
The Flying Dutch won 6-2 and 4-0 at Gainey Field in Kentwood to improve to 21-14 overall and 13-3 in MIAA play.
In the second game, starting pitcher Olivia Vacik of Bollingbrook, Ill. (Neuqua Valley HS), and reliever Maddie Bellew of Jackson (Jackson HS) combined to shut out the Knights on seven hits. Vacik (4-0) allowed four hits and one walk.
Designated player Julie Sobieski of St. Charles, Ill. (St. Charles East HS), delivered a RBI single in the third and a run-scoring sacrifice bunt in a three-run fifth.
In the first game, Hope snapped a 2-2 tie with two runs apiece in the sixth and seventh.
A sacrifice fly from third baseman Kelsey Cooper of Romeo (Romeo HS) and an unearned run from first baseman Peyton Wells of Rockford (Rockford HS) put the Flying Dutch up in the sixth.
Centerfielder Autumn Anderson of Wayland (Wayland HS) added a RBI single in the seventh, while Wells slapped a run-scoring double.
Vacik earned the win with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. She allowed two hits and one walk.
Hope will play Olivet in MIAA Tournament opener at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 1, at Trine University.
