Hope's Carli Capestany, Nancy Benda Earn All-MIAA First Team Recognition

The Hope College pair of Carli Capestany and Nancy Benda are among six women's tennis players to be named to the All-MIAA First Team that were announced Friday.

Capestany, a senior from Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville HS), also claimed the MIAA's Karen Caine Scholar-Athlete Award.

Junior Anna Garcia of Battle Creek, Michigan (Lakeview HS), received the MIAA's Sue Little Sportsmanship Award. She also made the All-MIAA Second Team.

The Flying Dutch claimed their 22nd MIAA regular-season championship this spring with an 8-0 record.

Benda, a sophomore from Birmingham, Michigan (Seaholm HS), went 5-1 at No. 1 singles in MIAA play and 6-1 at No. 1 doubles this season.

Capestany posted 7-1 singles and doubles league records this season at three different singles flights and two different doubles flights.

Capestany is Hope's third consecutive Caine Scholar Athlete Award winner and third overall. The award honors Karen Caine, former long-term women's tennis coach at Adrian College.

Garcia is Hope's 15th Little Award winner, named for a 1954 Albion graduate. She went 8-0 in MIAA matches this season and 7-0 in doubles play.
