On a cold, wet night, Joey Williams remained red hot in a goal for the Hope College men's lacrosse team.

The sophomore from Farmington Hills, Michigan (Detroit Catholic Central HS) recorded 16 saves to lead the Flying Dutchmen to a 14-5 win against visiting Southwestern, Texas Thursday at Van Andel Stadium.

Williams, pictured, tied for the second-most saves in a game by a varsity Hope goalie. He matched Seth McCall's 16-save effort against Olivet last season. The school record is 21. 

Head coach Michael Schanhals thought Williams played great, especially in rough weather.

"He did an excellent job of clearing the ball and initiating our fast breaks," Schanhals said. "This gave us momentum. A breakout performance for Joey."

The Flying Dutchmen (5-3 overall) matched their longest win streak in varsity history at five. They previously won five in a row to start their debut varsity season in 2013.

Junior Gunnar Elder of East Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids HS) and sophomore Grant Brogan of East Lansing, Michigan (East Lansing HS) scored four goals apiece to lead Hope.

Elder, who leads the Flying Dutchmen with 35 goals this season, scored three times during the first period to stake Hope to a 6-0 lead against Southwestern (6-6).

Senior Parker Osterink of Longwood, Florida (Seminole HS) and freshman Gino Battaglia of Lebanon, Ohio (Lebanon HS) added two goals apiece. 

The Flying Dutchmen return to action on Saturday, March 26 at Concordia Chicago. Start time is 1 p.m. Central.
