Combined Team Effort Leads Men's Lacrosse Past Adrian

Box Score
Ten different players scored for the Hope College men's lacrosse team Saturday as the Flying Dutchmen rolled to an 18-2 victory over Adrian in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association contest at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Goals by senior Gunnar Elder of East Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids HS) and freshman Andrew Pavey of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Forest Hills Eastern HS) just 12 seconds apart midway through the first quarter snapped a 1-1 tie and ignited a run of seven unanswered goals for Hope that broke the game open.

Elder, who is Hope's career leader in goals, assists and points, added to his record totals with three goals and five assists for an eight-point day. Freshman Rocco Mularoni of Hartland, Michigan (Detroit Catholic Central HS) added four goals, giving him a team-leading 29 tallies for the season.

Hope led 9-2 at the half, then blanked the Bulldogs the entire second half while tacking on nine more goals. Pavey, senior Zach Weber of Ann Arbor, Michigan (Pioneer HS), and sophomore Gino Battaglia of Lebanon, Ohio (Lebanon HS) each scored twice for the Flying Dutchmen. Adding single goals were freshman Max Kuiper of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Forest Hills Central HS), sophomore Micah Bieri of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS), freshman Andrew Caris of Hartland, Michigan (Detroit Catholic Central HS), freshman Jon Kloostra of Zeeland, Michigan (Zeeland West HS) and freshman Scott Brooks of Columbus, Ohio (Hilliard Davidson HS).

Hope outshot Adrian 46-24, caused 30 Bulldog turnovers and won 16 of 24 faceoffs.

Freshman Nick Schanhals of North Muskegon, Michigan (North Muskegon HS) made seven saves while playing the game's first three quarters, with junior Joey Williams of Farmington Hills, Michigan (Detroit Catholic Central HS) turning away four shots in the final quarter. Freshman Nick Bazany of Howell, Michigan (Detroit Catholic Central HS) scooped up four ground balls and caused three turnovers.

Hope, now 2-0 in the MIAA and 7-3 overall, will hit the road for two conference games next week, facing Calvin at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Grand Rapids, followed by Kalamazoo next Saturday at noon.
