Softball Sweeps MIAA Player Of The Week Honors

Hope College's Morgann Kanouse and Sydney Jones have been selected the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Softball Players of the Week after helping the Flying Dutch win the league tournament last week.

Kanouse, a third baseman, is the MIAA Position Player of the Week, while Jones is the MIAA Pitcher of the Week.

Kanouse, pictured at right, batted .538 over five tournament games last week with four doubles, six RBIs and four runs scored.

The freshman from Cadillac, Michigan (Cadillac HS) went 4-for-9 with two doubles, three RBIs and one run scored to help the Flying Dutch win three must-win games, including two against regular-season champion Saint Mary's in the finals.

On Friday, Kanouse went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three runs scored in an elimination-round victory against Alma.

This is the first time Kanouse has been named MIAA Position Player of the Week.

Jones, pictured at right, earned MIAA pitching honors for the second time this season and the fifth time in her career.

The senior righthander from South Lyon, Michigan (East) pitched 20 innings over three starts during the MIAA Tournament and won twice.

In a 4-2 win over Saint Mary's in Saturday's championship game, Jones struck out eight with one walk and four hits in a complete game win. It was her 16th victory of the season — one fewer than her 2017 school record.

Earlier in the day, Jones struck out 14 of the 27 Calvin batters she faced. She walked four and allowing two hits in 4-1 Hope victory.

Jones, Hope's single-season and career strikeouts leader, finished the weekend with 28 strikeouts.
