Women's Swimming & Diving Wins 12 Events, Beats Albion

The Hope College women's swimming & diving team totaled 12 first-place performances during an 180-107 victory against Albion College on Saturday at Kresge Natatorium.

The Flying Dutch recorded the fastest three times in two events and the top two performances in four more events.

Senior Abigail Brinks of Commerce Township, Michigan (Walled Lake Northern HS) led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 11 minutes. 3.05 seconds.

She was followed by freshman Abigail LaDuke of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa) in second at 11:10.68 and freshman Paige Kuhn of Dorr, Michigan (Hamilton) in third at 11:20.51.

Brinks and LaDuke clocked the fastest two efforts in the 500 freestyle (5:24.13 and 5:26.47).

Sophomore Emma Schaefer of DeWitt, Michigan (St. Johns) headed 1-2-3 and 1-2 finishes in the 200 and 100 breaststroke, respectively.

Schaefer went 2:29.01 in the 200 breaststroke and 1:07.92 in the 100 breaststroke.

Junior Paula Nolte of Elmhurst, Illinois (York Community) finished runner-up in both races. She went 2:33.10 in the 200 and 1:10.43 in the 100. Freshman Aubrey East of Farmington Hills, Michigan (North Farmington) was third in the 200 at 2:35.94.

Hope claimed the top two spots in diving. Senior Sara Plohetski posted the top 1-meter total of 2:37.70 points. Junior Areal Tolsma of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian) collected a winning 3-meter score of 232.40.

Sophomore Meg Peel of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake) took first in the 100 and 200 backstroke (58.64 and 2:07.58).

Senior Sydney Asselin of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian) clocked the fastest 200 freestyle swim at 1:58.16.

Senior Betsy Craig of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids) won the 100 butterfly in 1:00.44.

The Flying Dutch also recorded winning times in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.

Peel, Schaefer, Craig and junior Allison Eppinga of Saline, Michigan (Saline) went 1:48.16 in the 200 medley relay.

Asselin, Brinks, Nole and junior Erica Slenk of Zeeland, Michigan (Holland Christian) went 1:39.27 in the 200 freestyle relay.

Hope's next meet is Saturday, February 2 at home against Alma College.
