But it was the visiting team that walked away with the win.
Hope College lost 3-0 to rival Calvin University in a matchup of nationally-ranked teams on a chilly, wet Saturday evening in front of 2,150 fans at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
It is the Flying Dutchmen's first loss in a month. Hope was 18th in this week's D3soccer.com poll. Calvin was eighth in the D3Soccer.com poll and 18th in the United Soccer Coaches poll.
Hope fell to 4-1-1 in MIAA play and 10-3-2 overall. Calvin clinched a share of the MIAA title with one game remaining. The Knights are 6-0 in conference play and 14-2-2 overall.
The Flying Dutchmen play their final regular-season game on Wednesday when they travel to Kalamazoo College for a 7 p.m. contest. The winner receives the second seed for the MIAA Tournament and a first-round bye from the Saturday, Oct. 30, MIAA Tournament quarterfinals.
Calvin took control of the game with two goals in a span of five minutes late in the first half.
After a corner kick, Oliver Akintade sent in a cross from the left corner that Alex Bowser knocked in for a 1-0 lead with 10:19 remaining in the first half.
The Knights struck again quickly after Ethan Harvey sent in a free kick for an Aguma Muhumuza header and a 2-0 lead.
Mason Smith scored for Calvin with 5:11 remaining in the second half.
Hope took more shots than the Knights. The Flying Dutchmen had 11 shots and four of them were on net. Calvin took seven shots with five of them on net.
Hope goalkeeper Daniel Hesselbein (Barrington, Illinois / Barrington Community HS) made two saves.
