A matchup of a Division II school versus a Division III school. A non-league battle of the Hope College men's lacrosse team against Davenport University. A three goal margin at half time would be obliterated with a high-scoring third period for the Flying Dutchmen to help lead them to the 17-10 win.
Hope improved to 8-2 on the season after defeating the Panthers.
Senior Jack Radzville and Plymouth, Michigan (University of Detroit-Jesuit HS) native, Michael Mann led the way for the orange and blue, each having multi-point nights. Radzille, a Howell (Howell, Michigan) grad, grabbed seven points from four goals and three assists in the Wednesday night victory, while Mann, the sophomore, also tallied seven points (3g, 4a). Radzville sent off 12 shots and Mann recorded 7 shots.
Radzville became the third Flying Dutchmen lacrosse student-athlete to reach 200 career points. He has 205 career points.
Senior Zach Wiggins (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Mattawan), pictured left, led the shots (14) and shots on goal categories (8) while also tallying a team-high six goals. Wiggins grabbed the first two goals of the game for Hope, his first of the match, and 28th of the season, came from an Ian Bosman (Centennial, Colorado / Cherry Creek) caused turnover at the 6:56 mark before putting in his second almost three minutes later.
The Flying Dutchmen and the Panthers found themselves tied at five in the middle of the second period, shortly before trading off goals from 7:06 left to play in the half until 4:00 to play in the second. Mann would record his first of the game to begin the back-and-forth, while Radzille slid in his second to begin a three unanswered goal streak to end the first half. Sophomore Blaine Hynde (Muskegon, Michigan / Reeths-Puffer) fired in his first goal of the season for Hope's ninth goal of the game, while Wiggins tallied the in-between goal at the 1:52 mark.
Hope College's scoring frenzied third period is what propelled them to eventual victory, where the visiting Flying Dutchmen outscored the Panthers 6-2, and outshot the home team 13-3. Davenport committed seven penalties during the third period of play.
Senior Cole Sheffler (Muskegon, Michigan / Reeths-Puffer, pictured right, had a team-high seven ground balls in the eighth win for Hope, while also going 17-28 on faceoffs. Brayden Blackburn (Muskegon, Michigan / Reeths-Puffer) and Liam Cunningham (South Lyon, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) shared the team-high two caused turnovers in the orange and blue's tenth game this season.
Jonathan Mann (Plymouth, Michigan / University of Detroit Jesuit) put up two points (1g, 1a), Brian Bera (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) had a goal and two assists, and Alex Goodall (Clarkston, Michigan / Lutheran Northwest) also collected a single goal against Davenport. Senior goalkeeper Bosman was in net making nine total saves after facing 26 shots from the Panthers, while the Flying Dutch offense tallied 47 total shots in the opposing end.
Hope returns to home field on Saturday, April 9 as they host Northwestern-St. Paul at 12:00 p.m. at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
