Men's Track and Field Place First in Two Events at GVSU Early Meet

The Hope College men's outdoor track and field team finished first in two events and runner-up in three more on Saturday during the final day of the Grand Valley State University Extra Meet.

The Flying Dutchmen raced to the top times in the 400-meter hurdles and the 4x400 relay at the non-scoring meet.

In the 400 hurdles, senior Nathan Woolum (Mattawan, Michigan / Mattawan HS) qualified for the eight-runner final and posted a winning and season-best time of 54.36 seconds.

In the 4x400 relay, the Flying Dutchmen topped a field of 10 that included more of their own. Junior Alex Daniels (Holland, Michigan / Holland), sophomore Liam Danitz (West Branch, Michigan / Ogemaw Heights), junior Joshua Ennen (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland West) and Woolum clocked a winning time of 3:20.32.

In the 1,500 meters, sophomore Ian Petruska (Fort Collins, Colorado / Fort Collins) finished runner-up out of 45 runners after recording a time of 3:58.64. King took ninth at 4:00.88.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, senior Dan Campbell (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton) placed second out of six runners by clocking a season-best time of 9:26.09.

In the 4x100 relay, Hope posted two of the top times in the five-entrant event.

The runner-up relay of sophomore Nolan Sanders (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow), Daniels, freshman Evan Keolasy (Fort Wayne, Indiana / Blackhawk Christian) and Danitz recorded a season-best run of 42.08 seconds.

Hope also finished fifth in the relay. Senior Silas Peterson (Holland, Michigan / Zeeland West), Terpstra, Miller and junior Aidan Kyle (Weston, Connecticut / Weston) clocked a time of 43.69.

In the 800 meters, junior Connor Vachon (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison) raced to third place out of 27 runners by posting a run of 1:54.87.

In the 200 meters, two Flying Dutchmen qualified for the eight-runner final: Danitz in fourth out 24 runners in a season-best time of 22.01 seconds and Daniels in seventh at 22.51.

In the 400 meters, Woolum finished fourth out of 26 runners after clocking a season-best run of 49.63 seconds.

In the 100 meters, two Hope runners advanced to the eight-runner, 100-meter final: Sanders in sixth out of 37 with a time of 11.05 seconds and Danitz in seventh at 11.20.

In the long jump, Keolasy placed fifth in a field of 29 with a season-best leap of 6.57 meters (21 feet, 6 ¾).

In the 100 hurdles, fifth-year Jackson Player (San Antonio, Texas / Winston Churchill) made it to the eight-runner final and finished eighth with a time of 16.09 seconds.

In the high jump, senior Nathan Colbrunn (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) placed eighth in a field of 11 after clearing a season-high 1.74 meters (5-8 ½).

In the shot put, sophomore Caleb Paarlberg (Alto, Michigan / Caledonia) took seventh out of 22 throwers with a heave of 14.09 meters (46-2 ¾). Woolum was 10th at 6.26 meters (20-6 ½).

In the discus, sophomore John Wenderski  (Livonia, Michigan / University Detroit Jesuit) finished 10th out of 30 throwers with a season-best toss of 40.64 meters (133-4).

Hope's next meet is Saturday, April 13, at 10:30 a.m. Central at the Wheaton College (Ill.) Invitational.
