Sprinter Sara Schermerhorn Lowers NCAA Division III-Leading 400-Meter Time at Notre Dame

Hope College sprinter Sara Schermerhorn bettered her own NCAA Division III-leading 400-meter time, topping a championship field that included eight NCAA Division I entrants at the University of Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational on Saturday.

The senior from Traverse City, Michigan (Traverse City West), clocked a winning time of 54.60 seconds — 0.22 faster than runner-up Camille Peisner of Notre Dame, who posted a personal record.

Schermerhorn's previous fastest time this season was 55.45 on Dec. 5 at Grand Valley State University.

The Flying Dutch also competed in the 800 meters and the distance medley relay.

In the 800, senior Molly Durow (Glenview, Illinois / Glenbrook South) recorded a personal record of 2:17.70 and placed 29th in a field of 40 Division I runners.

Hope also placed ninth in the distance medley relay as freshman Miranda Sawvel (Laramie, Wyoming / Centennial), Schermerhorn, junior Amanda Markham (Hoffman Estates, Illinois / William Fremd) and Durow finished in 12:16.77.

The Flying Dutch next compete Friday, Feb. 6, at 3 p.m. at Trine University's Mrs. G Invitational.
