Women's Track and Field Clocks Two MIAA Records at Indoor Championships

Hope finishes runner-up in the team standings

The Hope College women's track & field team set two MIAA records on Saturday during the final day of the MIAA Indoor Championships, presented by Collegiate Credit Union, and finished runner-up in the team standings.

The Flying Dutch established new league bests in the 400 meters and the 4x400 relay en route to totaling 164.5 points, finishing behind only Calvin University (220).


Hope, which earned seven more medals, placed ahead ahead of Trine University (138.33). Alma College (44.83), Adrian College (35.33), Albion College (25), Kalamazoo College (23), and The University of Olivet (12).


Senior Sara Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West) three-peated as the indoor 400-meter gold medalist in a meet-record time of 57.29 seconds, scoring 10 points. 


The Flying Dutch closed the meet with a meet-record performance in the 4x400 relay. Freshman Savana Monville (Auburn, Michigan / Bay City Western), senior Lauren Nemens (Sterling Heights, Michigan / Adlai E. Stevenson), senior Frances Cozzens (Lyman, New Hampshire / Saint Johnsbury Academy) and Schermerhorn posted a gold-medal time of 4:02.13 to score 10 points.


Hope earned six silver medals on Saturday.


In the 200 meters, Schermerhorn finished second with NCAA Division III's sixth-fastest time this season at 24.37 seconds, adding eight points after placing second to Calvin's Sydney Radigan (23.98). 


In the 60 meters, Schermerhorn also took runner-up with the nation's 11th-fastest run at 7.61 seconds, trailing only Radigan's 7.57. Schernmerhorn topped Nora Kuiper's 2009 Hope record of 7.69.


In the 800 meters, senior Molly Durow (Glenview, Illinois / Glenbrook South) finished second in 2:19.37 to earn eight points. Durow also scored in the mile, placing second in 4:54.69 for another eight points. 


In the 3,000 meters, junior Mary England (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Kalamazoo Central) recorded a runner-up finish in the 3,000 meters in 10:18.51 to score eight points.


In the shot put, senior Kamryn Bice (Monroe, Michigan / Monroe) placed second in the shot put with a throw of 11.83 meters (38 feet, 9¾ inches) to earn eight points. 


The Flying Dutch claimed three bronze medals on Saturday.


In the 60 meters, sophomore Sofia Fisher (Lombard, Illinois / Montini Catholic) placed third in 7.79 to score six points.


In the 400 meters, freshman Jaidyn Klimp (Galesburg, Michigan / Galesburg Augusta) recorded a third-place 400-meter run of 59.21.


In the 60-meter hurdles, sophomore Lydia Rowe (Livonia, Michigan / Adlai E. Stevenson) earned six points by clocking a time of 9.08. Freshman Makayla Hilliard (Flushing, Michigan / Clio) added two points with a seventh-place finish in 9.50, and Klimp contributed one point with an eighth-place finish with a time of 10.87.

Freshman Anna Sybenga (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) added four points with a fifth-place finish in the 3,000 meters, while junior Olivia Ippel (St. Joseph, Michigan / St. Joseph) contributed two points with a seventh-place effort.


In the pole vault, freshman Kate May (Arcadia, Michigan / Frankfort) cleared 2.92 meters (9-7) to finish fourth and score five points. Junior Abigail Cumings (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) placed fifth at the same height to add four points.


Freshman Eliana Kotsonis (Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin / Hamilton) earned two points with a seventh-place finish in the triple jump (10.38m / 34-0¾).


In the shot put, Senior Karly Roelofs (Kingsley, Michigan Kingsley Area) added two points with a seventh-place toss of 10.94 meters (35 feet, 10¾ inches).


Hope will return to action on Friday, March 6, at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Last Chance meet.
