Five Facts To Know About The Flying Dutchmen

Josh Boss, Ryan Neils and Rob Peel are some of standouts that comprise the rich history of the Hope men's swimming & diving team. Here are five facts to know about the Flying Dutchmen.

Swimming is a family affair at Hope. During the 2008-09 season, Hope had had five sets of brothers and sisters in the pool — Laura (senior) and Steven (freshman) Ansilio, Lisa (freshman) and Phil (junior) Heyboer, Elizabeth (freshman) and Ryan (junior) Nelis, Andrew (freshman) and Matt (junior) Rose, and Christina (junior) and Ryan (senior) Vogelzang.

Number of Flying Dutchmen swimmers who hold Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association league records — Josh Boss in 200-yard breaststroke at 2:01.16 in 2002 and 100 breaststroke at 55.01 in 2000, Nelis in 100 butterly at 48.88 in 2009 and 200 butterfly at 1:50.32 in 2009, Phil Heyboer in 200 and Josh Grabijas in the 1,650 freestyle at 15:51.0 in 2012.

Number of MIAA titles the Flying Dutchmen have won under coach John Patnott's guidance. He also has 19 MIAA championships with the women's team, making him the winningest active MIAA coach in any sports.

Number of national champions Patnott has coached at Hope, including 11 associated with the men. Boss's seven breaststroke titles in the 100- and 200-yard between 1999-2002 lead the way. Rob Peel won the 50 freestyle in 1987. The 1991 800 freestyle relay of Jeff Bannink, Phil Sotok, Brad Genson, Jon Hescott finished first, as did the 1994 800 freestyle relay of Kirk Assink, Shawn Kinser, Steve Hope and Brad Genson) and the 1995 200 medley relay of Jack Methric, Matt Hollebeek, Aaron Hoffman and Derek VanderHeide.

Number of Flying Dutchmen All-Americans Patnott has helped produce in individual and relay events over his 32 seasons.
