Hope Men's Swimming & Diving Tops Albion 183.5-114.5 On Senior Day

The Hope College men's swimming & diving team defeated Albion 183.5-114.5 on Senior Day on Friday at Kresge Natatorium.

The Flying Dutchmen finished first in 10 events for their third Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association dual meet win in four tries this season.

It was the final meet at Kresge Natatorium for five Hope seniors: Grant Ludema of Ada, Michigan (Grand Rapids Christian HS), Erick Skaff of Flint, Michigan (Carman-Ainsworth HS), and Christopher Waechter of Ventura, California (Foothill Technology).

Junior Duncan MacLean of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids HS), won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:20.99 and the 500 freestyle in 5:001.8.

Junior Jeff Zita of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS), finished first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.12 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:13.75.

Junior Trevor Billinghurst of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake HS), clocked the fastest time in the 50 freestyle at 22.60.

Junior Nathan Rommel of Overland Park, Kansas (Blue Valley NW HS), won the 100 butterfly in 54.44.

Hope went 1-2-3 in 1-meter diving: sophomore Jean-Luc Miralda of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, with 249.10 points, freshman Kevin Franz of Mundelein, Illinois (Mundelein), with 218.70 points and freshman Kyle Weck of Marshall, Michigan (Marshall HS), in 2:08.70.

The Flying Dutchmen also swept the top three places in 3-meter diving: Miralda with 272.95 points, Franz with 254.55 points and Weck with 194.50 points.

Freshman Charlie Emmert of Grand Blanc, Michigan (Flint Powers Catholic HS), posted the top time in the 200 butterfly of 1:59.00 and was second in the 500 freestyle at 5:02.58.

The Flying Dutchmen won the 400 freestyle relay. Billinghurst, Waechter, junior Samuel Gallmeyer of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids HS), and sophomore Ryan Johnson of Milford, Michigan (International Academy), in 3:14.54. 

Hope returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Michigan-Illinois Quad at Wheaton College.
