Hope Men's Swimming & Diving Places Second At MIAA Relays

The Hope College men's swimming & diving team tied for second place at the season-opening Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Relays on Saturday in Grand Rapids.

The Flying Dutchmen totaled 52 points to share runner-up honors in the five-team event with Kalamazoo. Host Calvin (112) won.

Hope took second in the 200 freestyle relay. Junior Ryan Johnson of Milford, Michigan (International Academy), junior Jonathon Maat of Holland, Michigan (Holland HS), senior Samuel Gallmeyer of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids HS), and senior Trevor Billinghurst of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake HS) clocked a time of 1 minute, 28.19 seconds.

The Flying Dutchmen were runner-up in the 1,500 freestyle relay. Freshman Josh Meade of Kentwood, Michigan (East Kentwood HS), freshman Seth DeWitt of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville HS) and freshman John Hackley of Wilmette, Illiinois (New Trier HS) posted a swim of 15:14.99.

Hope placed third in the 200 breaststroke relay. Senior Taylor Hatfield of Coloma, Michigan (St. Joseph HS), junior Trevor Wagoner of Hixson, Tennessee (McCalle HS), Maat and senior Micah Sall of Zeeland, Michigan (Zeeland East HS) recorded a swim of 1:57.81.

The Flying Dutchmen took fourth in the 200 backstroke relay. Junior Danny Sullivan of Columbus, Ohio (Upper Arlington HS), freshman Trevor Gras of Zeeland, Michigan (Zeeland East HS), sophomore Charlie Emmert of Grand Blanc, Michigan (Flint Powers Catholic HS) and Hackley clocked a time of 1:47.01.

Hope was fourth in the 200 butterfly relay. Sall, Billinghurst, Johnson and Hatfield finished in 1:40.38.

The Flying Dutchmen placed fourth in the 100 butterfly relay. Billinghurst, senior Duncan MacLean of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids HS), Sall and Hatfield went 44.25.

Hope finished fifth in the 200 medley relay. Junior Christian Otteman of Zeeland, Michigan (Zeeland East HS), Meade, Emmert and Gallmeyer posted a swim of 1:41.35.

The Flying Dutchmen were fifth in the 500 progressive relay. Gallmeyer, Johnson, MacLean and Hackley had a time of 4:32.02.

Hope came in fifth in the 100 backstroke relay. Otteman, Gras, Johnson and Sullivan went 47.87.

The Flying Dutchmen placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke relay. Maat, Otteman, freshman Brian Brown of Lemont, Illinois (Brother Rice HS) and Wagoner had a swim of 53.30.

Hope was fifth in the 4 x 100 medley relay. Otteman, Wagoner, Sall and Emmert went 3:58.70.

The Flying Dutchmen return to action on Saturday, Oct. 31 with a dual meet at Kalamazoo. Start time is 11 a.m.
