Hope's Jean Luc Miralda Second In 1-Meter Diving At MIAA Championships

Sophomore Jean Luc Miralda of Tegucigalpa, Honduras (Honduras American HS), took second place in 1-meter diving to lead the Hope College men's swimming & diving team Thursday at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championships.

The Flying Dutchmen are in fourth place with 200 points. They trail Calvin (302), Kalamazoo (251) and Albion (212) heading into Friday at Holland Community Aquatic Center.

Miralda posted a six-dive score of 475.60 points.

During Thursday's preliminaries, Miralda set a school record with a total of 485.05 points. He passed the old championship mark of 457.6 held by Jim Mitchell since 1990.

Freshman Kevin Franz of Mundelein, Illinois (Mundelein HS), placed third in 1-meter diving with 461.30 points.

Junior Duncan MacLean of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids HS), took third in the 500 freestyle with a swim of 4:40.94, while freshman Charlie Emmert of Grand Blanc, Michigan (Flint Powers Catholic HS), was fifth at 4:47.61.

In the consolation final, senior Grant Ludema of Ada, Michigan (Grand Rapids Christian HS), finished 13th in 4:58.30. 

Hope finished fourth in the 200 freestyle and the 400 medley relays.

Junior Trevor Billinghurst of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake HS), junior Samuel Gallmeyer of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids HS), sophomore Jonathon Maat of Holland, Michigan (Holland HS), and sophomore Ryan Johnson of Milford, Michigan (International Academy), posted a 200 freestyle relay time of 1:24.87.

The 400 medley relay of freshman Mike Wurster of Indianapolis, Indiana (Brebeuf Jesuit Prep), junior Jeff Zita of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS), junior Nathan Rommel of Overland Park, Kansas (Blue Valley NW), and Johnson clocked a swim of 3:28.19. 

Johnson placed fourth in the 50 freestyle at 21.36. In the consolation final, Gallmeyer took 14th in 22.09 and Billinghurst was 16th at 22.13. 

Four Hope swimmers competed in the consolation finals of the 200 individual medley: Maat in 11th at 1:58.27, senior Christopher Waechter of Ventura, California (Foothill Technology), in 13th at 1:59.05, Zita in 14th at 1:59.34 and Rommel in 16th at 2:00.28.
