Hope Men's Swimming & Diving Claims Two No. 2 Seeds For MIAA Finals

The Hope College men's swimming & diving team is seeded second in two events heading into Friday's finals of the MIAA Championships.

Competition tonight starts at Holland Community Aquatic Center at 5:30 p.m.

Sophomore Jean Luc Miralda of Tegucigalpa, Honduras (Honduras American HS), set a school record in 3-meter championship meet diving during the preliminaries.

Miralda totaled a six-dive score of 527.5 points for second place and advanced to the finals. He passed Jim Mitchell's school championship-meet mark of 484.4 that had stood since 1989.

Two teammates also made the finals: freshman Kevin Franz of Mundelein, Illinois (Mundelein HS), in fourth place with 447.3 points and freshman Kyle Weck of Marshall, Michigan (Marshall HS), in seventh place with a score of 391.95.

The 200-yard medley relay finished second during preliminaries. Sophomore Christian Otteman of Zeeland, Michigan (Zeeland East HS), sophomore Trevor Wagoner of Hixson, Tennessee (McCalle HS), junior Micah Sall of Zeeland, Michigan (Zeeland East HS), and sophomore Jonathon Maat of Holland, Michigan (Holland HS), clocked a time of 1:38.14.

Otteman qualified third for the 400 individual medley championship final with a time of 4:07.49.

Senior Grant Ludema of Ada, Michigan (Grand Rapids Christian HS), made the consolation final with a 14th-place swim of 4:38.01.

Three from Hope made the 100 butterfly championship final: junior Nathan Rommel of Overland Park, Kansas (Blue Valley NW), in fourth at 52.38, freshman Charlie Emmert of Grand Blanc, Michigan (Flint Powers Catholic HS), in sixth at 52.81 and sophomore Ryan Johnson of Milford, Michigan (International Academy) in seventh at 52.92.

Three more reached the consolation final: Sall in 10th at 53.42, sophomore Danny Sullivan of Columbus, Ohio (Upper Arlington HS), in 13th at 53.64 and junior Trevor Billinghurst of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake HS), in 16th at 55.26. 

Junior Duncan MacLean of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids HS), advanced to the 200 freestyle championship final with a fourth-place time of 1:43.72 during preliminaries.

Two made the consolation final: senior Christopher Waechter of Ventura, California (Foothill Technology) in 11th at 1:45.64 and junior Samuel Gallmeyer of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids HS), in 14th at 1:47.63. 

Three reached the 100 backstroke final: Otteman in sixth at 53.31, freshman Mike Wurster of Indianapolis, Michigan (Brebeuf Jesuit Prep), in seventh at 53.49 and Sullivan in eighth at 55.11.

Two made the 100 breaststroke championship final: junior Jeff Zita of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS) in fifth at 58.07 and freshman Nick Olen of Midland, Michigan (Lyons Township HS) in eighth at 1:03.88.

Two more Flying Dutchmen made the consolation final: Wagoner in 11th at 1:00.52 and Maat in 14th at 1:01.27.

Hope is fourth in the MIAA standings with 200 points. Calvin leads with 302 points and is followed by Kalamazoo (251) and Albion (212).
