Men's Swimming & Diving Tops Kalamazoo In MIAA Dual Opener

The Hope College men's swimming & diving team beat Kalamazoo College for the first time in six years on Saturday with a 167-133 win in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association dual meet opener at Kresge Natatorium.

Hope posted the top performances in nine events.

Senior Christian Otteman of Zeeland, Michigan (Zeeland East) led a 1-2-3 Hope sweep in the 100 backstroke by clocking a swim of 55.77 seconds. He was followed by junior Mike Wurster of Indianapolis, Indiana (Brebeuf Jesuit) in second at 56.63 and freshman Daniel Clyde of Ann Arbor, Michigan (Huron) in third at 57.61.

The Flying Dutchmen also went 1-2-3 in the 100 freestyle: senior Ryan Johnson of Milford, Michigan (International) in first at 49.49, junior Charlie Emmert of Grand Blanc, Michigan (Flint Powers Catholic) at 49.43 and Clyde at 50.79.

Senior Jean Luc Miralda of Tegucigalpa, Honduras (American) posted a winning 3-meter diving score of 308.5 points.

Sophomore Brian Simonich of Highland, Michigan (Milford) won 1-meter diving after scoring 263.50 points. He had a runner-up 3-meter score of 289.80.

Hope posted the top two times in the 200 backstroke: Wurster in first at 2:03.09 and Otteman at 2:05.24.

Emmert recorded first-place efforts in the 100 butterfly of 54.13 and the 200 butterfly of 2:00.68.

Otteman took first in the 200 individual medley at 2:03.84.

Johnson won the 50 freestyle in 22.41. He came in second in the 200 freestyle at 1:53.06.

The Flying Dutchmen closed the meet with a winning 400 freestyle relay. Johnson, Clyde, Wurster and Emmert had a time of 3:17.62.

Hope took second in the 400 medley relay. Wurster, sophomore Joshua Meade of Kentwood, Michigan (East Kentwood), Otteman and freshman Keon Rick of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake) went 3:47.21.

Sophomore Jeff Engle of Kalamazoo, Michigan (Home School) finished runner-up in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 17:58.66.

Senior Trevor Wagoner of Hixson, Tennessee (McCalle) was second in the 200 breaststroke at 2:24.48.

The Flying Dutchmen's next meet is Saturday, Nov. 12 at Olivet.
