Hope's Jean Luc Miralda Runner-Up In MIAA In 1-Meter Diving

Jean Luc Miralda finished runner-up in 1-meter diving to lead the Hope College men's swimming & diving team at the 2016 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championships on Thursday.

The junior from Tegucigalpa, Honduras (Honduras American) recorded a score of 458.90 points to place only behind Albion's Jake Burris, who had 503.35 points.

The Flying Dutchmen are in third place with 225 points heading into Friday's competition that features 10 a.m. preliminaries and 5:30 p.m. finals.

Senior Duncan MacLean of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids HS) placed third in the 500 freestyle final. He recorded a time of 4:38.47.

Freshman Seth DeWitt of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville HS) was eighth at 4:51.18.

Sophomore Charlie Emmert of Grand Blanc, Michigan (Flint Powers Catholic HS) came in ninth after winning the consolation final at 4:46.60. Sophomore Joseph Watson of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Catholic Central HS) had a 15th-place swim of 5:01.02. Freshman Josh Meade of Kentwood, Michigan (East Kentwood HS) was 16th at 5:10.11.

The Flying Dutchmen took third in the 200 freestyle relay. Junior Ryan Johnson of Milford, Michigan (International Academy), junior Jonathon Maat of Holland, Michigan (Holland HS), senior Taylor Hatfield of Coloma, Michigan (St. Joseph HS) and senior Samuel Gallmeyer of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids HS) clocked a time of 1:24.20.

Johnson finished sixth in the 50 freestyle final with a swim of 21.21 seconds.

The Flying Dutchmen also picked up points from swimmers in the 50 freestyle consolation race: Hatfield in ninth at 21.44, Gallmeyer in 10th at 21.68, senior Trevor Billinghurst of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake HS) in 11th at 21.69 and Maat in 16th at 22.33.

Four Hope swimmers also competed in the 200 individual medley consolation races: senior Nathan Rommel of Overland Park, Kansas (Blue Valley NW HS) in 10th at 1:59.13, senor Micah Sall of Zeeland, Michigan (Zeeland East HS) in 12th at 2:01.53, junior Trevor Wagoner of Hixson, Tennessee (McCalle HS) in 15th at 2:08.20, and freshman Trevor Gras of Zeeland, Michigan (Zeeland East HS) in 16th at 2:12.39.

Calvin leads with 352.5 points, while Albion is second with 230.5. Kalamazoo is fourth with 200 and followed by Olivet (97) and Alma (4).
