The Hope College women's soccer team erupted for the most goals in five seasons en route to a 6-1, season-opening win against Hanover, Indiana on Friday in Wheaton, Illinois.
It was the best effort for the Flying Dutch since an 8-0 home win against Albion on October 31, 2012 at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
Senior Elizabeth Perkins of Eaton Rapids, Michigan (Lansing Christian HS) scored twice to lead Hope. Perkins, pictued at right, also recorded an assist.
The Flying Dutch received goals from five different players, including juniors Erin Brophy of West Lafayette, Indiana (West Lafayette) and Natalie Curry of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grandville Calvin Christian) and sophomore Rachael Braginton of Grandville, Michigan (Grandville) and Hilary Curry of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grandville Calvin Christian).
Senior Rachel deMarigny of Park Ridge, Illinois (Maine Township South) also collected an assist.
Hope jumped to a 3-1 halftime lead.
The Flying Dutch defense played well, too. They limited Hanover to three shots on goal. Junior goalie Mary Clare Theis of East Lansing, Michigan (Haslett) needed to only make two saves.
Hope returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 3 with an 8 p.m. nonleague match at Wheaton.
