Freshman Amanda Diaz's walk off single in the bottom of the seventh inning powered the Hope College softball team to a perfect two-win day in Clermont, Florida on Thursday.
The rightfielder from Round Lake, Illinois (Mundelein HS) delivered a two-out, game-winning hit for a 7-6 win against Fontbonne, Missouri that followed a 5-0 morning win against St. Catherine, Minnesota.
Hope improved to 8-2 overall with its third consecutive victory.
Against Fontbonne, the Flying Dutch answered a score-tying run in the top of the sixth in the seventh.
Hope loaded the bases on a walk to second baseman Sierra Mutschler of Wayland, Michigan (Wayland), a throwing error on a fielder's choice from designated player Katie Singer of Howell, Michigan (Hartland) and a one-out walk to pinch-hitter Sarah Jones.
After a lineout, Diaz, pictured, singled up the middle to knock in Mutschler.
Winning pitcher Tena Baar of Byron Center, Michigan (Byron Center) faced four batters and fired a scoreless seventh for his first victory in three decisions.
The Flying Dutch surged ahead 6-2 with a five-run third that included a two-run triple from catcher Hayley Reitsma of Grand Rapids, Michigan (GR Christian) and a RBI double from Mutschler.
Against St. Catherine, Sydney Jones tossed her fourth shutout of the season and lowered her ERA to 0.20. The junior from South Lyon, Michigan (East) allowed seven hits and one walk. She struck out six.
Shortstop Shay Pinhey of Ann Arbor, Michigan (Pioneer) contributed two run-scoring hits. Centerfielder Sammi Adams of Griffith, Indiana (Griffith) had a RBI triple.
Hope closes its spring trip on Friday, March 24 with games against Tufts, Massachusetts and Lawrence, Wisconsin.
