Box Score 2 A season-high in runs boosted the Hope College softball team to a 12-9 win against Lawrence, Wisconsin on Friday in Clermont, Florida to end a successful trip down south for the Flying Dutch.
Hope finished its annual spring break trip with a 9-3 record after losing to Tufts, Massachusetts 6-3, then beating Lawrence. The Flying Dutch equaled the second-most wins during spring break. They went a team-best 10-2 in 2015.
Against Lawrence, shortstop Shay Pinhey of Ann Arbor, Michigan (Pioneer HS) and designated player Katie Singer of Howell, Michigan (Hartland) both collected three hits to lead a 12-hit attack.
Hope scored in every inning but the third and seventh. Pinhey also totaled a team-best three RBI.
Singer, also the winning pitcher, yielded three runs on six hits in four innings. Singer (2-0) struck out one and did not walk a batter.
Reliever Tena Baar of Byron Center, Michigan (Byron Center) earned her first save with 2 ½ innings of work. Baar allowed two runs - both unearned.
Against Tufts, first baseman Sarah Jones of Norton Shores, Michigan (Mona Shores) hit her first home run of the season for the Flying Dutch in a losing effort.
Losing pitcher Sydney Jones of South Lyon, Michigan (East) struck out nine - giving her 50 in 42 innings on the season. A three-run Cassie Ruscz homer in the top of the fifth gave Tufts (6-5) the lead for good at 4-2.
Jones (5-1) still has a 1.00 ERA after six starts in Florida.
Hope returns to action on Tuesday, March 28 with a nonleague doubleheader at Aurora, Illinois.
