Men's Swimmers Post Three All-Time Top 10 Performances at Kenyon Invite

Hope College men's swimmers Colin Kalkman and Ben Catton delivered three of the fastest swims in team history on Thursday during Day 1 of the Kenyon College Total Performance Invitational in Gambier, Ohio.

Colin Kalkman clocked the 14th-ranked Flying Dutchmen's second-fastest swim ever in the 100-yard backstroke. The sophomore from Zeeland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS) led off Hope's the 400 medley relay with a backstroke split of 49.59 seconds.

The 400 medley relay finished seventh. Kalkman teamed with sophomore Christian Dunaitis (Commerce Township, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central), Catton (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) and sophomore Conner Halberg (Novi, Michigan / Northville) for a time of 3:20.32.

Kalkman also swam the Flying Dutchmen's fourth-fastest 200 individual medley ever by touching the wall at 1:52.48 and placing 14th. Sophomore Dallas Fisher (Highland, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) also made the 'B' final and finished 20th at 1:58.33.

Catton tied for the Flying Dutchmen's fifth-fastest 50 freestyle time at 20.84 seconds after leading off the 200 freestyle relay.

The relay finished ninth after Catton, Kalkman, sophomore Joel Cummins (Osceola, Indiana / Penn) and senior JT Nissen (Spring, Texas / Klein Collins) went 1:23.86.

Senior Bailey Smith (Battle Creek, Michigan / Lakeview) and Halberg placed 14th and 15th in the 500 freestyle with times of 4:38.26 and 4:39.92, respectively.

With 195 points, Hope is in sixth place. Second-ranked Kenyon leads with 667 points.

The three-day meet continues on Friday, Nov. 18, with a 10 a.m. morning session and a 6 p.m. evening session.
