Three Top 10 Men's Swims Clocked at Day 2 of Kenyon Invite

Colin Kalkman and CJ Gillengerten both excel for the Flying Dutchmen

Top 10 all-time swims in school history from sophomore Colin Kalkman and junior CJ Gillengerten pushed the Hope College men's swimming and diving team up the standings at the Kenyon College Total Performance Invitational on Friday.

The 14th-ranked Flying Dutchmen rose two spots to fourth place after totaling 545.points after two days. 

Hope moved ahead of Milligan University (519.5) and SUNY-Geneseo (449.5). No. 2-ranked Kenyon leads with 1,640 points and is followed by NCAA Division II West Chester University (982.5) and No. 9-ranked Carnegie Mellon University (852).

Kalkman (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian HS) posted two career-best times.

In the 100 backstroke, Kalkman swam 49.41 seconds during prelims for the Flying Dutchmen's second-fastest swim ever in the event. Kalkman finished eighth after going 49.45 during the 'A' final. 

Teammate Ben Catton (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) was 10th after going 50.38 in the 'A' final.

In the 100 butterfly, Kalkman went 49.52 during the 'B' final for the Flying Dutchmen's third-fastest time ever in the event and a 15th-place finish. 

Catton took fourth at 48.38; Catton holds the 100 butterfly school record at 47.40.

Gillengerten (East Lansing, Michigan / Haslett) ranks eighth for the Flying Dutchmen all-time in the 100 breaststroke after clocking a time of 57.60 during the 'B' final for a 20th-place finish. 

Sophomore Christian Dunaitis (Commerce Township, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) placed ninth after going 56.61 in the 'A' Final.

In the 200 freestyle, sophomore Conner Halberg (Novi, Michigan / Northville) finished second after touching the wall at 1:40.90. West Chester's Tyler Hall won at 1:39.41. 

Sophomores Alex Boersema (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) and Joey Grasman (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) both raced in the 'B' final and finished 12th at 1:42.41 and 20th at 1:43.82, respectively.

Hope took seventh in both relays.

In the 200 medley relay, Kalkman, Dunaitist, Catton and senior Jackson Uyl (Jackson, Michigan / Jackson) recorded a swim of 1:30.82.
In the 800 freestyle relay, senior Bailey Smith, Halberg, Boersema and Grasman raced to a time of 6:53.47.

Junior Conor East (Farmington Hills, Michigan / North Farmington) placed 18th in the 400 individual medley after posting a time of 4:08.53 in the 'B' final.

The three-day meet concludes on Saturday, Nov. 19, with 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. sessions.
