A fantastic split-squad performance gave the 16th-ranked Hope College men's swimming and diving team a second-place finish at the Davenport University Quad this weekend.
The Flying Dutchmen totaled 788 points over the two-day meet at East Kentwood High School that concluded on Saturday despite not having a full roster. Hope also competed at the D3 Shootout at the University of Chicago over the weekend.
Hope finished behind Davenport's 1,200 points. DePauw University placed third with 579 points. Kalamazoo College was fourth with 514 points.
On the women's side, the Flying Dutch took third with a split-squad.
"It was a great two-day meet," assistant coach Dave Jolly said. "Throughout the meet, we compounded swims and put together great performances. It was fun to watch both teams working together. A positive mentality brings about great performances."
Hope finished runner-up in six events.
Freshman Bishop Carl (Cincinnati, Ohio / Sycamore HS) was a part of three second-place swims.
Carl went 1:47.28 in the 200 freestyle, 1:58.54 in the 200 butterfly and 1:28.28 in the 200 freestyle relay with junior Braeden Pfeil (Holt, Michigan / Holt), sophomore Joel Cummins (Osceola, Indiana / Penn) and senior Jackson Uyl (DeWitt, Michigan / DeWitt).
In the 200 free, Carl was followed by three teammates in the Top 6: senior
Bailey Smith (Battle Creek, Michigan / Lakeview) in third at 1:47.28; junior Ben Dubay (Omaha, Nebraska / Millard West), in fifth at 1:47.43 and sophomore
Joey Grasman (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) in sixth at 1:48.29.
In the 200 fly, two teammates joined Carl among the seven fastest times: Cummins in fourth at 1:59.24 and senior JT Nissen (Spring, Texas / Klein Collins) in seventh at 2:05.72.

Ted Lockett (Mason, Ohio / St. Xavier) clocked a runner-up swim of 2:13.78. Junior
CJ Gillengerten (Haslett, Michigan / Haslett) took fourth at 2:16.98. Junior
Reilly LaGrand (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Catholic Central) was sixth at 2:18.83.
Smith posted a second-place time in the 1,650 freestyle of 16:45.20. Grasman was fourth at 17:19.10.
Hope recorded three of the fastest five, 500 freestyle swims: Grasman in second at 4:54.99, Smith in third at 4:55.19, and freshman Kenny Pontius (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) in fifth at 4:59.59.
LaGrand placed third in the 100 breaststroke at 59.23. Gillengerten took fourth at 1:02.13. Senior Jack Muller (Queensland, Australia / Meridian State) was eighth at 1:03.53.
The Flying Dutchmen's 200 medley relay finished third as Pfeil, LaGrand, Cummins and Dubay clocked a time of 1:38.43.
Cummins took fourth in the 100 butterfly at 53.67. Lockett finished seventh at 54.35. Nissen was eight at 54.63.
Junior Joey Gillengerten (East Lansing, Michigan / Haslett) recorded a fourth-place dive on the 3-meter board of 159.82 points and a fifth-place effort on the 1-meter board of 148.80 points.
Cummins finished fifth in the 50 free at 22.20 points. Pfeil was eighth at 22.39.
Junior Kyle Langdon (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) clocked a fifth-place swim in the 400 IM of 4:27.43. Sophomore Cooper Osgood (Saline, Michigan / Saline) was seventh at 4:37.30.
Freshman Sam Albrecht (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison) posted a fifth-place time in the 100 backstroke of 55.29 and a sixth-place effort in the 200 backstroke of 2:02.47.
Hope's 400 freestyle relay of Carl, Smith, Uyl and Cummons placed fifth at 3:18.88.

The Flying Dutchmen's 400 medley relay of Albrecht, LaGrand, Carl and Uyl took sixth at 3:40.47.
Lockett was eighth in the 200 IM at 2:04.33.
