Ben Catton Qualifies for the 2022 USA Swimming Toyota U.S. Open

The junior will race in 100-yard butterfly on Friday, Dec. 2.

Hope College swimmer Ben Catton will compete against the nation's best this weekend at the 2022 USA Swimming Toyota U.S. Open.

The junior from Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS) has qualified to race on Friday, Dec. 2, in the 100-yard butterfly for the meet at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.

The Toyota U.S. Open Championships is a long-course meter competition which consists of hundreds of athletes, including members of the U.S. National Team, National Junior Team, the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team, and the 2022 FINA World Championships U.S. roster.

In order to participate in the meet, participants had to meet qualifying time standards in either the long-course meter or short-course yard version of events in the last calendar year.

The Toyota U.S. Open Championships begin on Friday at 9 a.m. The 100 butterfly is the next scheduled event of the day.

Catton earned his spot by clocking a school-record and MIAA-record time of 47.40 seconds at the MIAA Championships in February at Holland Aquatic Center.

A business and economics double major, Catton is the first Hope swimmer to secure a spot in 20 years, head coach Jake Taber said.

"We are grateful for the opportunity to support Ben competing in such a prestigious meet," Taber said. "It's an honor to qualify and compete against some of the best swimmers in the world. It will be such a unique experience as well as a thrilling and elite setting."
