Sophomore Conner Halberg Wins Two Distance Freestyle Swims at Calvin

No. 20-ranked Hope dropped the final MIAA dual meet of the season to No. 12 Calvin.

Swimmer Conner Halberg led the 20th-ranked Hope College men's swimming and diving team with first-place performances in distance freestyle events on Friday at Calvin University.

The sophomore from Novi, Michigan (Northville HS) recorded the fastest swims in the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle during the 174-69 loss to the 12th-ranked Knights.

Hope finished MIAA dual meets with a 4-1 league record. The MIAA champion will be determined at the league meet on Wednesday-Saturday, February 15-18, at Calvin.

Halberg clocked a winning 500 freestyle time of 4 minutes, 46.67 seconds.

In the 1,000 freestyle, Halberg touched the wall first at a season-best 9:48.20.

The Flying Dutchmen placed runner-up in four events.

Halberg anchored the second-place 400 freestyle relay. Sophomore Colin Kalkman (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian), junior Ben Catton (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian), sophomore Alex Boersema (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) and Halberg recorded a swim of 3:09.12. It was the relay's second-fastest swim of the season.

Sophomore Dallas Fisher (Highland, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) placed second in the 200 individual medley at 1:55.56.

Sophomore Christian Dunaitis (Commerce Township, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) was runner-up in the 100 backstroke at 59.98.

Junior Ewan Tiongson (Portage, Michigan / Portage Northern) finished second in 1-meter diving with a season-best score of 251.92 points.
