No. 20 Men's Swim/Dive Wraps Up Total Performance Invite with 5th-Place Finish

The 20th-ranked Hope College men's swimming and diving team recorded four Top 10 performances on the final day of the Total Performance Invitational hosted by Kenyon College (Ohio).

The Flying Dutchmen placed fifth out of eight teams with 863 points. Hope finished ahead of No. 18-ranked and SUNY-Geneseo, which took sixth with 578.5 points.

Second-ranked Kenyon won the meet with 1,894.5 points. No. 11 Carnegie Mellon, Pa., finished second with 1,573.5 points and was followed by third-place and NCAA Division II West Chester, Pa. (1,456.5) and fourth-place and 12th-ranked Case Western Reserve, Ohio, (1,140). John Carroll (Ohio) finished seventh (863). NAIA Lindsey Wilson, Ky., was eighth (327).

In 1-meter diving, senior Ewan Tiongson (Portage, Michigan / Portage Northern) took second out of three competitors with a total of 411.15 points. Senior Joey Gillengerten (East Lansing, Michigan / Haslett) was third with 340.55 points.

In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Hope clocked a fourth-place swim of 3:02.95 from junior Colin Kalkman (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian), senior Ben Catton (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian), freshman Graham Eisenmann (Ozark, Montana / Ozark) and freshman Connor Watkins (Buckeye, Arizona / Horizon).

The Flying Dutchmen also had a second relay that went 3:08.93 in the 400 free with sophomore Henry Booker (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville), junior Alex Boersema (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa), senior Conor East (Farmington Hills, Michigan / North Farmington) and sophomore Bishop Carl (Cincinnati, Ohio / Sycamore).

In the 200 backstroke, Kalkman finished seventh with a swim of 1:52.23.

Sophomore Samuel Albrecht (Jenison,  Michigan / Jenison) took 17th at 1:57.08. Junior Dallas Fisher (Highland, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) was 20th at 2:00.63.

In the 100 butterfly, freshman Nick Suranyi (Novi, Michigan / Novi) clocked an 11th-place time of 1:52.20. East was 17th at 1:54.40.

In the 100 freestyle, Catton recorded a 13th-place effort of 46.15. Watkins was 20th at 46.72. 

In the 1,650 freestyle, freshman Andrew Repp (Plymouth, Michigan / Salem) touched the wall in 17th at 16:30.72.

In the 200 breaststroke, junior Christian Dunaitis (Commerce Township, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) was 20th at 2:08.18.

Hope's next meet is Saturday, Jan. 13, for swimmers at the Michigan-Illinois Quad hosted by Wheaton College (Ill.) and for divers at the Kalamazoo College Invite.
