No. 18-Ranked Men's Swim/Dive Starts Strong at D3Shootout

The 18th-ranked Hope College men's swimming and diving team delivered several strong performances during Day 1 of a loaded D3Shootout on Friday in Chicago.

The Flying Dutchmen clocked fourth-place finishes in three events and teamed for a meet-record one in a co-ed event.


With 175 points, Hope is in fifth place at the eight-team event, including five others who are ranked. The two-day meet hosted by the University of Chicago resumes on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 11:30 a.m. Central.


In the 200-yard medley relay, junior Colin Kalkman (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian HS), junior Christian Dunaitis (Commerce Township, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central), senior Ben Catton (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) and freshman Graham Eisenmann (Ozark, Montana / Ozark) posted a fourth-place swim of 1 minute, 32.83 seconds.


In the 200 butterfly, freshman Nick Suranyi (Novi, Michigan / Novi) touched the wall in fourth place at 1:54.83. Freshman Alex Pierce (Oswego, Illinois / Oswego) was 13th at 1:57.53.


In 1-meter diving, junior Ewan Tiongson (Portage, Michigan / Portage Northern) recorded a fourth-place total of 238.55 points.


In the mixed 400 medley relay, Catton and Fisher paired with juniors Greta Gidley and Sara Kraus (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) for a meet-record time of 3:38.72.


The Flying Dutchmen took fifth in three events.


In the 400 individual medley, Suranyi posted a fourth-place swim of 4:13.68. Pierce was 13th at 4:09.48 in the consolation final. 


In the 200 freestyle, junior  Conner Halberg (Novi, Michigan / Northville) clocked a fifth-place time of 1:43.90. Eisenmann was 14th at 1:45.47.


In the 100 backstroke, Kalkman touched the wall in fifth at 51.96. Junior Dallas Fisher (Highland, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) was 11th at 52.78.


Hope also finished fifth in two events.


In the 50 freestyle, Catton recorded a sixth-place swim of 21.38. Kalkman was 14th at 21.70.


In the 100 breaststroke, Dunaitis placed sixth at 58.59. Halberg was 16th at 1:07.16.


In the 800 freestyle relay, Fisher, Eisenmann, Halberg and Pierce clocked a sixth-place swim of 7:04.31.


Third-ranked Chicago leads the meet with 234 points, three more than second-place and 13th-ranked Pomona Pitzer (Calif.) and 10 more than third-place and eighth-ranked Washington University in St. Louis.


Trinity (Texas) is in fourth place with 182 points. No. 20-ranked SUNY-Geneseo is sixth with 164 and followed by No. 21 Swarthmore (Pa.) with 156, and Wabash (Ind./) with 131.
