No. 18 Men's Swim/Dive Ties For Fifth at Competitive D3Shootout

Two fourth-place finishes highlighted the final day of a competitive D3Shootout for the 18th-ranked Hope College men's swimming and diving team on Saturday in Chicago.

Senior Ben Catton and junior Ewan Tiongson posted the top performances for the Flying Dutchmen, who placed fifth in the eight-team, two-day meet at the University of Chicago.

No. 3-ranked Chicago won the two-day meet that featured six ranked teams by totaling 496 points and finishing five points ahead of runner-up and 13th-ranked Pomona Pitzer (Calif.).

No. 8 Washington University in St. Louis took third with 478 points and was followed by Trinity (Texas) with 389 points, Hope and No. 20 SUNY-Geneseo with 372, No. 21 Swarthmore with 355 points and Wabash (Ind,) with 276.

Catton (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian HS) clocked a fourth-place swim of 49.77 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly. 

Tiongson (Portage, Michigan / Portage Northern) took fourth in 3-meter diving with a score of 244.80 points.

Catton also recorded a fifth-place, 100 freestyle of 46.76 seconds. Junior Conner Halberg (Novi, Michigan / Northville) was 15th at 48.01.

In the mixed 400 freestyle relay, Hope finished fifth as freshman Graham Eisenmann (Ozark, Montana / Ozark), Halberg, sophomore Katie Hermann (Canton, Michigan / Mercy) and senior Delaney Wesolek (Bay City, Michigan / John Glenn) had a time of 3:22.57.

Hope finished seventh in six more events.

Junior Christian Dunaitis (Commerce Township, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) touched the wall in seventh in the 200 breaststroke at 2:12.74. Freshman Alex Pierce (Oswego, Illinois / Oswego) was 15th at 2:14.98.

In the 200 backstroke, junior Colin Kalkman (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian) finished seventh at 1:56.80. Junior Dallas Fisher (Highland Park, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) was 14th in the B final at 1:55.63.

Fisher also took seventh in the A final in the 200 individual with a time of 2:02.61. Freshman Nick Suranyi (Novi, Michigan / Novi) was 11th in the B final at 1:57.63.

In the 400 medley relay, Hope recorded a seventh-place swim of 3:27.02 from Kalkman, Dunaitis, Suranyi and Eisenmann.

In the 200 freestyle relay, the Flying Dutchmen placed seventh with a time of 1:25.93 from Catton, Kalkman, Eisenmann and Fisher.

In the 500 freestyle, Halberg recorded an eighth-place swim of 4:48.24. In the B final, Pierce was third-fastest and 11th overall by touching the ball at 4:44.73.

Also in the 100 butterfly, Suranyi was 12th at 51.29 seconds.

Hope's next event is Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 16-18, at the Kenyon College (Ohio) Invitational. Kenyon is ranked No. 2 in Division III.
