Swimmer Ben Catton Finishes 23rd at the NCAA Championships in the 100-Yard Freestyle

Hope College swimmer Ben Catton placed 23rd in the nation in the 100-year freestyle on Saturday at the NCAA Division III Championships in Greensboro, N.C.

The junior from Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS) clocked a season-best swim of 45.45 seconds during preliminaries on Friday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Catton recorded the fastest time of his eight-swimmer heat.

The 100 freestyle was Catton's second race of the meet.

Catton just missed the finals in the 100-yard butterfly after posting a 17th-place swim in the 100-yard butterfly of 48.28.

Head coach Jake Taber said Catton did well despite the challenges he faced in Greensboro.

"He had some support from our current members of the guys' team in the standings. I think it's a really hard thing to come here and be the only member of the men's team, but I think he's hungry," Taber said. "That's one of those things that can be very motivating from today until Day 1 next season. "We feel we've got a lot of guys who can compete at this level and that's going to be one of our goals for next year."
