The 16th-ranked Hope College men's swimming and diving team completed a busy weekend with a pair of victories against MIAA opponents.
The Flying Dutchmen defeated Albion College, 155-70, and Alma College, 154-71, on Saturday at Hudsonville High School.
On Friday, Hope competed against NCAA Division I Oakland University and Division II Saginaw Valley State University at Oakland.
Hope took first in 11 events vs. Albion and Alma, including the top three times in two events.
In the 400 individual medley, freshman Connor Watkins (Buckeye, Arizona / Horizon HS) recorded the fastest swim at 4 minutes, 19.90 seconds. Freshman
Nick Suranyi (Novi, Michigan / Novi) placed second at 4:20.42. Sophomore
Bishop Carl (Cincinnati, Ohio / Sycamore) was third at 4:21.15.
In the 100 freestyle, freshman Graham Eisenmann (Ozark, Montana / Ozark) touched the wall first at 47.81. Senior
Conor East (Farmington Hills, Michigan / North Farmington) placed runner-up at 48.21. Carl was third at 49.01.
The Flying Dutchmen went 1-2 in five events.
In the 200 freestyle, junior Dallas Fisher (Highland, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) placed first at 1:47.74. East was second at 1:50.20.
In the 500 freestyle, senior
Bailey Smith (Battle Creek, Michigan / Lakeview HS) recorded a winning swim in 4:57.52. Watkins was runner-up at 4:58.23.
In the 200 butterfly, junior Joel Cummins (Osceola, Indiana / Penn) clocked a first-place time of 2:03.46. Junior
Alex Boersema (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) was second at 2:04.13.
In 1-meter diving, sophomore Justin Romero (Detroit, Michigan / Woodhaven) finished first with a total of 190.50 seconds. Senior Joey Gillengerten (East Lansing, Michigan / Haslett High School) was runner-up at 183.25.
In 3-meter diving, Romero took first with 235.85 points. Gillengerten was second with 191.15 points.
Hope touched the wall first in four other events.
In the 50 freestyle, Cummins won with a swim of 21.85 seconds.
In the 200 backstroke, sophomore Samuel Albrecht (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison) posted a winning time of 2:07.72.
In the 1,650 freestyle, junior Conner Halberg (Novi, Michigan / Northville) placed first in 16:59.03.
Hope won the 400 medley relay as senior Ben Catton (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian), senior Reilly LaGrand (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Catholic Central), Eisenmann and junior Cooper Osgood (Saline, Michigan / Saline) recorded a time of 3:36.59.
On Friday, Hope lost to Saginaw Valley State, 232-57, and Oakland, 235-47.
Catton and Eisenmann posted the Flying Dutchmen's top finishes with third- and fourth-place swims in the 50 freestyle of 21.39 and 21.41 seconds, respectively.
In the 1,000 freestyle, Smith took fifth at 10:18.24.
Hope's next meet is Saturday, Jan. 27, against fourth-ranked University of Chicago at Holland Aquatic Center.
