No. 19-Ranked Men's Swim/Dive Takes Second Place at West Michigan Invite

The 19th-ranked Hope College men's swimming and diving team finished in second place at the West Michigan Invite as the Flying Dutchmen competed in the meet's final two sessions on Saturday. 

Friday's opening session was held at the Holland Aquatic Center. On Saturday, the teams moved to the Kalamazoo College Natatorium to complete the meet.


Davenport University, a member of NCAA Division II, led the field with 1,110.5 points, while Hope collected 1,021 points. Wabash College (Indiana) finished third with 671 points, while Kalamazoo College (328.5 points) and the University of Olivet (13) points rounded out the field.


The 200-yard medley relay team of senior Colin Kalkman (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian HS), freshman Luke Newcomb (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton), sophomore Graham Eisenmann (Ozark, Missouri / Ozark), and freshman George Marsh (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan / Seaholm) opened the day with a third-place finish, posting a time of 1:35.89.


Kalkman added a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.97, and just missed the podium in the 200 backstroke, finishing fourth in 2:01.91.


Eisenman also posted a second-place showing, swimming a season-best 51.06 in the 100 butterfly, just .07 seconds shy of Davenport's David Szczygiel.


Freshman Joe Engle (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) finished second in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 16:21.27 as the top three swimmers all broke the pool record. Engle's mile time is the second fastest in NCAA Division III this season. He was also Hope's top finisher in the 200 freestyle, placing fourth with a time of 1:45.15.


Sophomore Nick Suranyi (Novi, Michigan / Novi) added a pair of podium finishes for Hope, finishing second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:54.59 and placing third in the 400 individual medley, touching the wall in 4:15.86. 


The 400 freestyle relay team of sophomore Josh Bordovsky (Herndon, Virginia / South Lakes), Engle, Kalkman, and Eisenmann finished third with a time of 3:12.46.


On the diving board, junior Justin Romero (Detroit, Michigan / Woodhaven) placed fourth in the one- and three-meter events. Romero scored 183.10 points in the three-meter competition before posting a season-high 196.10 score on the one-meter board.


Hope's next meet is the D3 Shootout, held on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8-9, at the University of Chicago.
