Conner Halberg Wins 200 Freestyle for No. 19 Men's Swim/Dive During Loss to No. 9 Calvin

Junior swimmer Conner Halberg took first in the 200-yard freestyle to lead the 19th-ranked Hope College men's swimming and diving team against Calvin University on Saturday.

Halberg (Novi, Michigan / Northville HS) clocked a 200 freestyle time of 1 minute, 44.24 seconds at the Holland Aquatic Center. The ninth-ranked Knights won the meet by a 227-73 margin.

Hope finished MIAA dual meets with a 4-1 league record. Calvin went 5-0. Dual meet results do not determine the league champion. 

The next meet is the MIAA Championships on Wednesday-Saturday, Feb. 21-24, Hope is hosting at the Holland Aquatic Center.

The Flying Dutchmen finished runner-up in four events against Calvin.

In the 100 freestyle, senior Ben Catton (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) clocked a second-place swim of 47.05 seconds.

In the 500 freestyle, Halberg placed runner-up by recording a time of 4:51.09.

In 1-meter diving, junior Ewan Tiongson (Portage, Michigan / Portage Northern) posted a runner-up total of 272.95 points.

In 3-meter diving, Tiongson recorded a second-place score of 258.60 points.

Hope also finished third in seven events.

In the 50 free, Catton took third with a swim of 21.23.

In the 200 free, sophomore Henry Booker (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) posted a third-place time of 1:46.52.

In the 1,000 freestyle, senior Bailey Smith (Battle Creek, Michigan / Lakeview) finished third after swimming 10:09.92.

In the 100 backstroke, junior Colin Kalkman (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian) clocked a third-place swim of 53.52.

In the 100 butterfly, freshman Graham Eisenmann (Ozark, Montana / Ozark) recorded a third-place time of 52.41 seconds.

In the 200 butterfly, freshman Nick Suranyi (Novi, Michigan / Novi) placed third at 1:57.92.

Hope's 400 freestyle relay took third. Sophomore Bishop Carl (Cincinnati, Ohio / Sycamore), Eisenmann, freshman John McHugh (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton) and Halberg posted a swim of 3:13.09.
