Freshman Joe Engle posted a season-best swim in the 1,000 freestyle to help the 17th-ranked Hope College men's swimming and diving team deliver a first-place effort against Kalamazoo College and host Wheaton College (Illinois) on Saturday.
The Flying Dutchmen won six events and totaled 538 points, 109 more than second-place Wheaton. Kalamazoo was third with 208 points.
Engle (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa HS) touched the wall at a season-best 9 minutes, 41.34 seconds, 14 seconds better than his previous top time.
Hope swept the top spots in both relays.
In the 400 medley relay, the Flying Dutchmen opened the meet with senior Colin Kalkman (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian), senior Christian Dunaitis (Commerce Township, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central), sophomore Nick Suranyi (Novi, Michigan / Novi) and freshman Josh Bordovsky (Herdon, Virginia / South Lakes) winning in 3:30.59.
In the 400 freestyle relay, Kalkman, junior Henry Booker (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville), Engle and sophomore
Graham Eisenmann (Ozark, Montana / Ozark) posted a first-place performance of 3:09.46.
Hope recorded the fastest four swims in the 50 freestyle, led by Bordovsky's 21.50.
Kalkman took second at 22.06. Booker placed third at 22.11. Sophomore Christian Hoeksema (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) was fourth at 22.33.
Hope went 1-2-3 in the 200 freestyle: Eisenmann in first at 1:43.81, senior Conner Halberg (Novi, Michigan / Northville) in second at 1:44.85 and senior Dallas Fisher (Highland, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) in third at 1:46.33.
Eisenmann also clocked the fastest swim in the 100 freestyle at 46.72. Fisher was second at 47.56.
Hope finished runner-up in three events.
In the 200 IM, freshman Luke Newcomb (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton) touched the wall in second at 2:01.14.
In the 500 freestyle, Bordovsky placed second at 2:01.14.
In the 200 breaststroke, freshman Luke Wyrick (Glen Ellyn, Illinois / Glenbard West) was runner-up at 2:15.59.
The Flying Dutchmen's next meet is Friday, Jan. 24, at 5:30 p.m. vs. Davenport University at the Holland Aquatic Center.
